Nani Negron Remembered By Friends, Family at Candlelight Vigil

Funeral services for Shanel "Nani" Negron will be held Friday in Waukesha. Meanwhile, Eddie D. Callaway, the man charged with killing the 24-year-old mother, remains on the run from police.

While fondly recalling the memory of her beloved, beautiful sister who was Danielle Rivera called for the violence to come to an end.

“Love your women,” said a passionate Rivera. “Get the word out.”

Rivera’s sister, Shanel “Nani” Negron, left behind her 3-year-old daughter, Jaslene, when she was killed in a domestic abuse shooting. Waukesha police officers are on the lookout for Negron’s boyfriend who investigators said shot her in the head before fleeing the scene at North Moreland Boulevard and Summit Avenue. Callaway has a history of violent behavior and Waukesha police believe he is armed and dangerous.

More than 200 friends, family and community members gathered at Frame Park Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil – just 48 hours after Negron was killed and Callaway took off from the area. Not everyone knew Negron or her family, but some came to support them anyway.

“She loved very, very hard," Rivera said

Rivera asked people to continue to get the word out about Callaway, who is heavily tattooed, to bring him into custody.

“Do not approach this man,” Rivera said. “Do not go up to him. Call the police right away. He is not that hard to miss.”

Natasha Gregory has known Negron for 10 years. She was walking around Frame Park with red poster boards with Negron’s pictures plastered all over the boards.

“This is just showing love,” Gregory said. “This is a small community and this is a big shock to all of us. To know somebody so close and intimately to be taken away from you, it is just a shock. I am so happy that everyone pulled together and is showing love. I appreciate it, I know her family appreciates it.”

Gregory also called for an end to domestic violence.

“This is important,” Gregory said. “This is happening all over all the time. The more that we shine light on this, maybe the farther we can come at putting a stop to this.”

Negron’s funeral service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Church and Chapel at Bluemound Road and Pewaukee Road after a visitation that will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mourners are asked to wear black, red and white — just not all black.

Another candlelight vigil will be held at Carroll University at 8 p.m. Monday on the campus’ main lawn. Friends, family and community members are asked to wear red at that vigil.
