Update: Veteran's Life Saved By Citizens, Waukesha Fire Department

Sherri Stigler started CPR on man after heart stopped late Monday morning.

The Memorial Day service following the parade through downtown Waukesha got off to a late start as paramedics began working on a man whose heart had stopped prior to the service at Cutler Park.

Sherri Stigler, wife of Deputy Police Chief Mark Stigler, performed CPR on the older-looking man who was wearing a dress uniform for about four minutes before the paramedics took over, according to the deputy police chief. Another citizen also jumped in to help, according to the Stigler family.

Paramedics from the Waukesha Fire Department took the man to the hospital before the Memorial Day service began.

The deputy chief credited the fire department for its professional, rapid response to the scene to join in the life-saving efforts.

"This community should be grateful and proud that so many concerned citizens, including Mrs. Stigler, jumped in to help this honored veteran in his time of need," Stigler said. "It was truly a team effort by many involved. ... I know that if I were ever in need that all of those professionals – from the dispatchers to the first responding EMTs and paramedics – would do their best to save my life as well.  Hats off to our dispatchers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics."
