Live the Dream: Events Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

How do you observe MLK Day?

Four events in Waukesha County have been planned to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the month of January.  The events surrounding the second annual  'Live the Dream' program include:

Feed the Dream - Monday, Jan. 9 to Friday, Jan. 27

This county-wide food drive and service project around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is designed to inspire youth to serve their communities and raise awareness about hunger in Waukesha County.  United Way in Waukesha County will be assisting school districts throughout the County as they coordinate food drives. Students will collect food and then count, sort, pack, and label boxes for delivery to their hometown food pantries.

A virtual tour titled “Riding with Rosa” featuring The Salvation Army, Hispanic Community Health Resource Center, Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic, La Casa de Esperanza Clinic, Interfaith Senior Programs and Saint Joseph’s Medical and Dental Clinic will be premiered.  The video will highlight agencies promoting Dr. King’s vision of service to the Waukesha County community. Representatives from the agencies listed will be on hand for a brief discussion following the video.

Lead the Dream - Jan. 16, at 11:30 a.m.

The luncheon, also at WCTC, will celebrate, recognize, and share the best practices of our business and community organizations in championing Dr. King’s dream for a world accepting of diversity.  It will include a panel discussion of organizations who have embraced diversity.  Tickets for the luncheon are $30 per person, or $225 for a table of 8, and attendees can register here.

Build the Dream - Monday, Jan. 23, 10am

This leadership program brings together County middle school leaders and their teachers and advisors to explore leadership and diversity issues that tie into Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision.  This year’s program will feature the Rachel’s Challenge.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for the school program, Rachel’s Challenge. A video of Rachel's life will be shown during a one hour presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others.

Check-in is at 10 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Richard T. Anderson Center on the campus of WCTC. Lunch and small group activities follow the presentation. Attendees will need to RSVP by Jan. 16, by calling 262-691-5302.

The sponsors of the events are WCTC, Waukesha County, the Waukesha County Business Alliance and the United Way in Waukesha County.  The coalition’s mission is to bring communities together to celebrate, raise awareness of, and live the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his vision of tolerance, acceptance, unity, peace, and social justice.
