Freezin' For Hunger 2013: New Location, Same Need

Help Waukesha Police Detective Tim Probst and others donate food for the Food Pantry of Waukesha County.

Editor's Note: The following information was provided to Patch via a news release from the Food Pantry of Waukesha County.

After a one-year hiatus, this winter fundraising event is back from 4 p.m. to midnight Friday. Food and cash donations will be accepted for the Food Pantry of Waukesha County (FPWC).

Area resident Tim Probst never realized his idea to shed light on the issues of the homeless and hunger would inspire so many people. As a former Board member and volunteer at the Food Pantry of Waukesha County, he has witnessed the realities of these issues more often than most.  In 2005 Tim was inspired to create Freezin’ for Hunger. He camped outside overnight exposed to the elements to raise awareness and collect donations for the FPWC.

This year, the Freezin’ for Hunger event has been relocated to the downtown area as part of the Waukesha’s annual JanBoree winter festival.   Tim, Food Pantry staff and friends of the Pantry can be found on the corner of Clinton and Main St. near The Steaming Cup.  Nonperishable food items and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Freezin’ location. Monetary donations labeled “Freezin’ for Hunger” can also be mailed directly to the FOOD Pantry of Waukesha County at 1301 Sentry Drive, Waukesha WI 53186.

Probst is looking forward to Friday’s kick-off saying, “The event has allowed me to surround myself with a lot of great people.  I have met so many interesting and caring people that have many of the same interests that I do.  It is good to be back.”

The food pantry staff is extremely grateful to Tim for his successful efforts.

“As a volunteer of the pantry, Tim knows that this time of year can be tough for our agency," said Karen Tredwell, executive director. "After the holidays, food donations dwindle until the Boy Scout Food Drive in March. He recognized that there are those in need in the community and simply stepped up and did something about it. He didn't wait for someone else or for the 'right' opportunity to do something – he just did it.  We need more people like Tim who simply created his own event and opportunity to help people."

In addition to the new location, this year’s Freezin’ for Hunger features a drive-up, drop-off lane for those donors who are interested in donating but not so interested in freezing!
