Farmers' Markets Offer Fresh Produce, Products

Patch brings you a guide to the area's farmers' markets.

Farmers' Markets are a great way to get the freshest produce, and find other handmade products not often available at the grocery store. To help you take advantage of the growing season's bounty, Patch has put together information on some of the markets in Waukesha, Milwaukee and Racine counties.

Elmwood Plaza Farmers Market
Location: Durand Avenue at Lathrop Avenue in Racine
Hours: 8 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays,  May through October
Features: Locally grown fresh produce, homemade goods, flowers and more!!

Fondy Farmers Market
Location: 2200 W. Fond du Lac Ave., Milwaukee
Hours: Saturdays 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., through Oct. 30; and Saturdays, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 5-29
Features: One of Milwaukee’s oldest and largest producers-only farmers market. Cooking demos and classes, youth activities and live music on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon.

Franklin Local Market
Location: Natures Nook, 9801 S. 27th St., in Franklin  
Hours: 9 a.m.-1p.m. Saturdays, through October 29th
Features: Franklin's Local Market features ONLY locally grown produce, vegetables, fruits, preserves and honey. This market does not have art and crafts. Market organizer Catherine Roeske says the market runs regardless of rain or shine. Greendale Open Market
Location: 
Municipal parking lot on Parking Street in Greendale
Hours: Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon on Aug. 6, 20 and 27, Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 1 and 15
Features: The Greendale Open Market, hosted by the , has been a tradition in the Village. Just this year the Park and Rec Department also hosted a Spring and Winter Market. The summer market has a wide variety of unique vendors and community groups feature their wares from flowers to fresh produce to bakery and arts and crafts.

Hales Corners  Harvest at the Homestead
Location: Stahl-Conrad Homestead, 9724 W Forest Home Ave, in Hales Corners
Hours: 8 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, Aug. 13, Sept. 3, 17th, Oct. 8th, 22nd           
Features: Harvest at the Homestead farmers’ market stems off the Hales Corners Stock Fair that ran monthly through 1871 to 1958 on Forest Home Avenue from Highway 100 north to Grange Avenue. Find vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, honey, candles, baked goods and more.

Howell Avenue Farmers Market
Location: US Bank, 4015 S. Howell Ave., Bay View
Hours: Saturdays, July through October, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Features: Fresh produce throughout the entire summer.

Market on the Hill: Pewaukee's Farmers Market
Location: 449 W. Wisconsin Ave., in Pewaukee
Hours: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Wednesdays, June through October
Features: While the Market on the Hill has the traditional produce vendors each Wednesday, other vendors include a drink mix seller, truffles, a massage therapist, flowers, bakeries and sandwich and salad dressings.

Mitchell Street Farmers Market
Location: Walker's Square Park, between 9th & 10th, Washington & Mitchell, Milwaukee
Hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open late May through Oct. 20.
Features: Fresh, healthy, affordable, locally-grown fruits and vegetables from Milwaukee area farmers. 

New Berlin Farmers Market
Location: 16300 W. National Avenue in New Berlin
Hours: Saturdays 7am-12pm, May 7 - October 29
Features: Seasonal produce, flowers, homemade products from area farms

Location: Oak Creek Community Center, 8580 S. Howell Ave., in Oak Creek           
Hours: 4-8:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and Aug. 24.
Features: Vendors include sellers of jewelry, flowers, bakery, arts and crafts and canned vegetables.

Racine County Indoor/Outdoor Farmers Market
Location: 1614 South Street, in Racine 
Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, year-round
Features: Predominantly local vendors from Racine County, including makers of organic dog treats, all-natural soaps and apple juices and cider. A New Glarus farmer features his free-range meat products as well as a variety of jarred jams, jellies and pickled vegetables.

Racine Downtown Farmers Market
Location: 700 State St. (corner of State St. and Erie), in Racine
Hours: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, May through October
Features: Fresh produce from within a 50-mile radius of Racine. For information contact Luane Gall, 262-886-6197.

Location: 1015 Four Mile Road in Caledonia
Hours: 2 to 6 p.m., Thursdays, May through October                       
Features: To raise the funds to support the garden, one third of the harvest is sold at their Farmers Market, held at the church. Other vendors participating in this event come from throughout southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois to sell their own fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, or hand-made craft items and garden art.

South Milwaukee Downtown Market
Location: 11th and Milwaukee Avenue       
Hours: 3-7 p.m. Thursdays           
Features: Area residents looking for a unique shopping experience travel to downtown South Milwaukee, where they find an eclectic mix of merchants selling fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, flowers, art, jewelry and everything in between. They also find a sampling of area restaurants, live entertainment and special events, making the South Milwaukee Downtown Market a true destination for families, foodies and everyone in between.

South Shore Farmers Market
Location: South Shore Park, 2900 S. Shore Dr., Bay View
Hours: Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon, mid-June through mid-October
Features: The South Shore Farmers Market connects Bay View residents with Wisconsin farmers and local food producers and serves as a community gathering place at South Shore Park.

Sturtevant Farmers Market
Location: 8505 Durand Avenue, Sturtevant           
Hours: Open May 23 through October 31; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays.
Features: Racine County farmers from east and west of I-94 bring their fruits and vegetables as well as pickled goods.

Tosa Farmers Market 
Location: Harmonee Bridge municipal parking lot, next to the historic Little Red Store, 7720 Harwood Ave., Wauwatosa
Hours: Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., through Oct. 15
Features: An open air market that brings locally-grown fruits and vegetables and foods crafted by Wisconsin artisans directly to the people of Wauwatosa and surrounding communities. TFM embraces a "buy local" ethos that fosters a greener, more sustainable city, bringing the community together in the process. 

Waukesha Farmers Market
Location: Riverfront Plaza by the Frame Park Riverwalk. The plaza is south of the Fox River between Broadway and Barstow.
Hours: 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, May to October. Depending on the weather, the market may be open into November.
Features: The popular Waukesha Farmers Market draws about 2,500 people on Saturdays. They park in nearby lots and walk through the market, looking at what about 70 vendors have brought to sell. Oberweis Dairy is one of the newest vendors; others sell produce, flowers, baked goods, popcorn, cheese and other items. —including where to park—in this Waukesha Patch story.

West Allis Farmers Market
Location: 1559 S. 65th St., West Allis
Hours: May through Thanksgiving weekend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 1-6 p.m.
Features: One of the largest, if not the oldest, established Farmers Markets in southeastern Wisconsin. All the farmers at the market have to raise what they sell. A wide range of produce arrives at the market throughout the year. The early season brings bedding plants, radishes, asparagus, and rhubarb. Strawberries and raspberries arrive in June as well as zucchini, squash, peas, snap beans. Corn arrives about a week after July 4 along with many other squashes and herb plants. The late season brings fresh apples and cider.

Location: corner of Washington Ave. and West Boulevard in Racine   
Hours: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays, May through October                        
Features: Local farmers sell locally grown items including fruits, vegetables and flowers in season. Eggs, homemade soaps and bakery are also for sale.
