Why Can't They Just Stop? Free Community Education Series on Understanding Addiction
Free Community Education offered to help community better understand addiction & recovery
Waukesha, Wisconsin.“Why can’t he/she just stop?” is something you may have asked yourself if you have a partner, child, parent or friend who is struggling with alcohol or other drug addiction. What can be done to help? Will treatment help? How do I get him/her into treatment? These may be some
of the questions you’ve asked yourself.
The Addiction Resource Council, Inc., local affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) is pleased to offer the four-week, free community education series designed to explain some of the complexities of addiction and recovery. People struggling with addiction are often viewed as either being weak-willed or having some form of sudden awakening and turning their life around. Unfortunately, these extremesobscure the complexity of addiction. The truth is that addiction changes the brain in ways that can make recovery much more difficult than “just stopping.” Recovering from the disease of addiction is an imperfect process. Achieving long-term abstinence can take some people years to accomplish. It is often common to experience setbacks, called relapse. Finding and getting adequate treatment can often be difficult and quite overwhelming. The good news, however, is that many addicts ultimately do recover—some on their own and others often with the help of effective behavioral treatment in combination with medications.
The series is divided into four, 1 ½-hour presentations that include video segments from the groundbreaking HBO documentary ADDICTION, followed by discussion led by a trained addiction professional.
