Viewfinder: Golden Gate Rings in the Year of the Rabbit with a Traditional Lion Dance
A crowd gathered in Golden Gate Restaurant's parking lot to witness traditional Chinese lion dancers and get a bit of good luck for the New Year.
Hundreds of years ago, the tradition of lion dancing began in China as a way to welcome in the New Year with positivity and power, at the same time scaring away the evil of the past year.
"They would use the drums, gongs, cymbals and lots of fireworks to scare away the evil and wake the lions," said Sifu Steve Kleppe of in Waukesha. "The lions β when awakened β would dance around and be protectors of the area for the year to come."
Kleppe said lion dancing is now used in many kinds of celebrations, from the birth of a child to the opening of a business or to a new home being built, anywhere a bit of good luck is needed.
