Irony of learning about Steve Jobs death on an iPhone

Jobs helped change and grow the tech world to bring users like myself to be up-to-date on the latest news. Jobs' legacy is integrated into my daily life so much that I barely realized it until today.

When I first heard about Steve Jobs passing away today, it was through my Apple iPhone while I was sitting in an airport.

I didn’t have time to dig out what happened to Steve Jobs as I was powering down my iPhone, but I saw one status on Facebook that said “so sad about Steve Jobs.”

Fast forward a few hours later and I found myself at the l replacing my iPhone, which wasn’t working so well. You can imagine the chatter around the store.

“He was so charismatic,” I overheard an employee tell a customer. The employee described the news as “surreal” to the Apple customer.

Jobs, the founder of Apple, clearly left his mark on the world. I’m literally writing this on my Mac and am in the process of redownloading iTunes to put my contacts on my new iPhone.

Jobs died at age 56 and words of condolence and memories of the technological visionary have been pouring in from across the country, including from President Barack Obama.

Here is Apple’s official statement:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Jobs’ family released a statement that said he died peacefully while surrounded by  family.
