Meijer Now Has No Land to Build On in Waukesha

The Common Council did not have enough positive votes to change the zoning to benefit Meijer.

Meijer’s hopes of building in Waukesha took a huge hit Thursday night.

The Common Council declined to change the land use of the property to fit a big-box store such as Meijer, according to Waukesha NOW. The vote was 6-5 in favor of the change, but eight votes were needed. Four aldermen were absent.

Neighbors of the property at the southeast corner of Tenny Avenue and East Sunset Drive fought that rezoning, citing traffic and aesthetic concerns. The proposed development is nearly 193,000 square feet and is proposed for a 24-hour operation.

A Meijer representative said the company will have to take stock of the decision and decide the next move, Waukesha NOW reported. The company is also attempting to build stores in Sussex, Wauwatosa, Oak Creek and Grafton.
