Cake Pops by Design Offers Specialized Treats

Laura Sholts started making specialized cakes a year ago.

It was nearly a year ago that Waukesha businesss owner Laura Sholts made her first cake pops.

She brought the small balls of cake rolled with frosting that are dipped in a sugary coating before being decorated with sprinkles and designs to a party. They were a hit, and people started asking if she would make and sell them.

“I didn’t really think twice about it, and I said ‘No,’” Sholts said.

But then she made them again for another party. Once again, the cake pops were a hit.

“I just thought maybe I will give it a try,” she said. “… Let’s just go for it, there is nothing to lose. And so far it has been great.”

Sholts openedin downtown Waukesha in October. So far, business has been “wonderful,” she said. The only slow weekend was Thanksgiving weekend when people were out at the stores shopping Black Friday sales.

Some people will simply walk into the store to see what she has to offer. In addition to a colorfully decorated storefront and decorated cake pops gift baskets, Sholts makes sure she has plenty of samples for people to try.

“They are fun to make, they taste good,” Sholts said. “Everybody loves them. It is not one of those things like the sugar cookies where they look good but then you eat them and they taste bad.”

She makes the cake pops to design, though, and has options available for special occasions like birthday parties, holiday dinners and baby showers. The more popular cake pops have been farm and zoo animals, she said.

“It is tailored to your event,” the entrepreneur said.

While the hours are limited at Cake Pops By Design because Sholts is working a full-time job during the day, she said she would like to see the business become sustainable so Cake Pops By Design becomes her steady job.

I agree that the folks at this Kwik Trip are great at assisting disabled people like myself but IRead More disagree that all Kwik Trips are helpful. There is a law that all gas stations are to assist you if you have disabled plates or a hanging placard if you press the help or disabled key on the pump. If there is no key (and I think all must have them by a certain date) then you are to honk horn twice and if there are at least 2 employees on duty, they are to assist. The K/T on St. Paul is useless. I've waited there, watching at least 3 employees mill around the counter with 1 or 2 customers and ingnore me. The Grandview station same but I haven't tried them in a few months. The worst station for that is whatever the one on St. Paul and Prarie is. I pulled in to see a female worker standing on side of building smoking. When she went in she was greeted by a male worker and I was ignored by both. I'd like to do a survey on how helpful each gas station is to the disabled. Kudos to Fleetfoot Kwik Trip! Whatever they got they should share with their brethren. I would rather give my $ to K/T because they are WI based and they donate regularly to the Salvation Army

I am fine with this service--its great. However being handicapped does not mean employees need toRead More give up their breaks or other customers need to let you cut in line in front of their service needs.
