Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin Coming to Carroll

The Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin presents a concert at y on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Shattuck Music Center, 218 N. East Ave., Waukesha. Call 262.524.7633 for tickets; $5 adults, $3 students and seniors 60 and older.

Under the direction of Michael Zens, the Youth Wind Orchestra will perform music by Fergal Carroll, Timothy Mahr, Rick Kirby, John Williams, Brian Balmages and Andrew Boysen Jr. The selections include "Elements" by Balmages, which has movements named for the four classical elements of wind, water, earth and fire, and "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," written by Boysen and inspired by Washington Irving's classic tale. This concert also will be performed at the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference in Madison on Oct. 27.

The Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin, now in its tenth year, is a 55-piece wind ensemble that consists of highly motivated and talented high school students from southeastern Wisconsin, selected by audition for membership. Zens has led this orchestra since January 2009. He is a music teacher and band director at Menomonee Falls High School.
