UW-Waukesha Art Gallery Showcases Student Work

University students display their best work in a gallery on campus.

For University of Wisconsin-Waukesha art student Ashley Kerr, seeing her creations on display is affirmation of hard work.

“It’s really neat to have your piece shown and everyone to see it,” she said. “It’s really nice to take a look at all your artwork from the entire year and see what you would choose to put in the exhibit.”

Kerr’s art is among work on display at the school in a student exhibit that opened April 25 and runs through May 20. Roughly 60 students are involved.

Students pick their best work from the year, and the exhibit is open to all students who have had an art class at UW-Waukesha during the fall and spring semesters.

Barbara Reinhart, the unpaid director of the gallery as well as an associate professor of art at the school, said more of students’ artwork will continue to flow into the gallery in coming weeks. Many students are still working on pieces in art classes.

The exhibit features a wide range of styles, media and subject matters. The exhibit includes paintings, sculpture, printmaking and drawing, as well as some photography.

UW-Waukesha student Eric Kummer was in the gallery this week taking a peek at the beginning stages of the exhibit.

“It’s really interesting to see all the skill levels of all students,” he said. “It’s really cool to see how it showcases what they’ve done throughout the entire year.”

Students also will have an opportunity to sell their art.

“We’re going to ask students to think about what kind of price they might want to put on their work,” Reinhart said.

If students wish to not participate, they can list the work as “not for sale.”

“That’s an additional experience that artists in the real world have to go through,” Reinhart said. “Whether it sells or not, just think of the work having this value. We have had some faculty and staff as well as some community members interested in purchasing some of the artwork.”

The gallery, in the Southview building on campus, 1500 North University Drive, is open from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
