What Will Happen to Local Landmark?

Landmarks Commission discussing fate of house-style gas station owned by Waukesha Family YMCA.

When a property owned by the Waukesha Family YMCA was designated as a landmark last summer, the YMCA fought to change the designation that was placed on a former gas station that is built in a house style.

The YMCA was looking to turn the property into a parking lot and instead the organization found its property designated as a landmark and it would be responsible for keeping the building properly maintained.

, it was determined that the former gas station should go on the market. The YMCA and the Landmarks Commission who would want to purchase and maintain the property. As of July 26, the property had not yet been sold, according to a Waukesha Now article. A voicemail seeking additional details with Chris Becker, executive director of the Waukesha Family YMCA, was not immediately returned.

The issue will be discussed tonight at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda states the commission will “discuss and act on the petition from the YMCA to rescind the local landmark designation for            the former Bartles-Maguire Oil Company/Wadhams Oil Company Service Station building at 422 E. Broadway (currently owned by the YMCA) per Section 28.05 of the municipal Code.”
