Tractor Pulls and Beach Boys Close Out Waukesha County Fair

The last day of the fair ends with old favorites.

The Waukesha Country Fair wrapped up with a bang. Tractor and truck pulls covered the day and The Beach Boys covered the night on the final day of the fair.

The Beach Boys took Miller Lite Main Stage at 6 p.m. The long-standing band had a good turnout and a mix of all ages. The band includes both newer and some original members. The Beach Boys released their first record in 1961.

It was a hot and humid Sunday, but luckily the rain stayed away. By 4 p.m., some people had already staked out their spots to hear The Beach Boys, who warmed up with their song, California Girls.

Kris Tofte, age 40, and Kaitlyn Tofte, age 6, of Cambridge, WI, had planned their trip since they learned that The Beach Boys would be performing. Kaitlyn couldn’t say what her favorite song was, but Kris said it had to be Surfin’ USA. They also saw The Beach Boys perform at last year’s Walworth County Fair.

Mary Vega, of Milwaukee, age 49, was in attendance as well. She said she and her companions were there, “Because we like the Beach Boys. They play good music and it’s a nice day for it.” They had planned it for two weeks and her favorite song is California Girls.

Adam Gullikson, age 44, and Laura Daily, age 42, both of Waukesha, have seen The Beach Boys perform four or five times.  When asked to pick a favorite, Gullikson couldn’t and said, “They’re all favorites.” Their appreciation for The Beach Boys go back to their childhoods and remind them both fondly of their fathers.

“I was a little kid listening to my dad’s Beach Boys eight track in his car and that’s how I got turned on to The Beach Boys," Gullikson said. "I was about 6 years old.”

Daily shares a similar sentiment when she hears, Be True to Your School.  Her father owned and played the song’s containing album.

Ian Ash opened for them as he was the winner of the Waukesha County Fair Top Singer. The Beach Boys travel to Michigan, Ohio and Minnesota to finish out the month of July. They will also be back in Wisconsin on August 2, when they play the WI Valley Fair in Wausau. Click here for their full schedule.
