Standardized Scores Reveal Montessori Grade 6 Performing at Grade 10 Level or More
Montessori School of Waukesha students perform four to five grade levels higher than their Grade 6 class distinction, according to standardized test results recently reported by the school. A matrix follows for MSOW grades 3-6.
The School’s Board President, Noëlle Bryant Nanz says, “The academic excellence seen in these scores comes from several areas. First is the philosophy that introduces young children to complex concepts in their most basic form and builds on the lessons at each level so that children have a deep understanding of difficult material much earlier than one would expect. Through accreditation, MSOW set out to exhibit excellence in every area of school performance and we are fortunate to have a very stable teaching faculty that is exceptionally well trained and Montessori certified. ” The school is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a Reunion Open House on April 26 from 1-4 at both of the school buildings (2600 Summit and 601 North University).
MSOW begins introducing students to standardized testing in Grade 3, while utilizing standardized tests in Upper Elementary/Middle School (grades 4 to 8) as part of the continual improvement process for curriculum. While the tests are designed to measure achievement, MSOW’s intent is to focus on areas in which each student would need additional time, assistance and/or challenge during the school year. “Montessori takes a holistic approach to child development with test scores being one indicator of achievement,” MSOW’s Director, Bill Walsh says. “Our teachers have high expectations for independence and responsibility, while the students also learn social nuances, team work and life skills for overall success. It is these expectations with requisite mastery that lead to performance.”
