UW-Waukesha Professor Offers ‘The Other’ Orwell

Timothy Dunn, associated professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, will present The "Other" Orwell: Seminal Works Beyond 1984 at noon Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the college.

The lecture will be held in Commons 101. The event is free and open to the public, and free parking is available during the lecture. UW-Waukesha is located at 1500 N. University Drive in Waukesha.

Orwell’s 1984 is currently being celebrated as part of the Waukesha Public Library’s Waukesha Reads program.

Dunn said his talk will go beyond 1984 and Animal Farm to cover some of Orwell’s lesser known essays and novels.

“Some of the themes I will discuss include his views on aesthetics, morality, Tolstoy and Ghandi, poverty, and politics,” he said.  “The goal of the talk is to increase our appreciation of the breadth and depth of Orwell’s philosophy and cultural criticism.”

Dunn, who came to UW-Waukesha in 2003, earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and BA in philosophy from Tulane University. He received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 2001. His areas of specialization are ethical theory and social and political philosophy. Dunn’s doctorate dissertation focused on moral dilemmas and moral luck.
