What is Sikhism?

Due to the tragedy in Oak Creek, I have been curious to learn more about Sikhism. So, I did some on-line research.

A Sikh website stated that there are over 20 million Sikhs in the wold while Wikipedia said that there are over 30 million believers which makes it the fifth largest world religion. The word "Sikh" means "student" or "disciple" in the Punjabi language.

The Sikh website listed five beliefs:

1.  "There is only one God.  He is the same God for all people of all religions."  Harmeet Singh stated in a Youtube video that there are many words for the same God.

2.  "The soul goes through cycles of births and deaths before it reaches the human form.  The goal of our life is to lead an exemplary existence so that one may merge with God.  Sikhs should remember God at all times and practice living a virtuous and truthful life while maintaining a balance between their spiritual obligations and temporal obligations."  According to the Sikh site, the founder of the religion was married and had children.  So, he felt that one could be a holy man but still commit to having a wife and family.

3.  "The true path to achieving salvation and merging with God does not require renunciation of the world or celibacy, but living the life of a householder, earning a honest living and avoiding worldly temptations and sins."  Wikipedia defined salvation as unity with God and listed five evils which are ego, anger, greed, attachment and lust.  It further stated that these five evils can distract and separate one from God.

4.  "Sikhism condemns blind rituals such as fasting, visiting places of pilgrimage, superstitions, worship of the dead, idol worship etc." Wikipedia stated that salvation is gained through devotions rather than religious ceremonies.

5.  "Sikhism preaches that people of different races, religions or sex are all equal in the eyes of God.  It teaches the full equality of men and women.  Women can participate in any religious function or perform any Sikh ceremony or lead the congregation in prayer."  Sikhism was founded and developed in the midst of Islam and Hinduism.  So, Sikhs opposed the inequality of the caste system of Hinduism.  I think this is why equality is such a foundational belief for them.

The founder of this faith was Guru Nanak (1469-1539).  The word Guru is a Sanskrit word meaning "teacher, honoured person, religious person or saint" according to the Sikh website.  There were nine Gurus who succeeded Guru Nanak until 1708.  Then the last Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, named the holy scripture as the last Guru.  The holy scripture is named Guru Granth Sahib.  The Sikh site stated that their holy scriptures even has some writings from "saints of other faiths."

Sikh religious extremists bombed and downed an Air India Boeing 747 off the coast of Ireland in 1985, killing 329 people in the deadliest aviation sabotage in history. Sikh attacks in India are mounted against Indian officials and facilities, other Sikhs, and Hindus; they include assassinations, bombings, and kidnappings. The attacks have dropped markedly since 1992, as Indian security forces have killed or captured a host of senior Sikh militant leaders and scored other successes against extremist groups. Total civilian deaths in Punjab have declined more than 95 percent since more than 3,300 civilians died in 1991. The drop results largely from Indian Army, paramilitary, and police successes against extremist groups. Many low-intensity bombings that might be attributable to Sikh extremists now occur without claims of credit. Don't get me wrong those innocent people did not deserve to die that terrible death but I thought I would put a little perspective on the Sikh persona; they’re a pain in the butt to the greater population of India.

To begin with, I'm not trying to defend or justify any acts of violence mentioned by you. However, I would like to mention a few things. True, Sikhism originated in India but after the partition of India in 1947, Sikhs were divided between Hindu majority India and Muslim majority Pakistan. In 1984, Hindu extremists with assistance from Indian government massacred Sikhs in the capitol of India, New Delhi. Sikhs then tried to create their own country out of Punjab, because they did not feel safe under Indian government. All these attacks were in retaliation and in effort to create a safe country for Sikhs - as Jews have done with Israel. However, Sikhs' efforts to do so was not successful as Indian Army attacked Punjab, bombarded the Golden Temple. Sikhs are not "pain in the butt to the greater population of India". All the efforts of India to kill the Sikhs had given rise to Sikh extremists. There is a lot more to history which can not be explained in few words. Again, I'm not trying to justify violence but hopefully, these few words would change your opinion about Sikhs a little bit. God bless you.

Thanks. To be honest I'm sick of the media cherry picking religions to victimize. Plenty of Christians died in this world too. The media and schools would never go out of their way to educate us about them though.

Nuitari,

Excellent point. If this had happened to Christians or Jews we wouldn't hear anything about it after 7 days, and Michelle Obama would have flown over Wisconsin once again.

Thanks for the history explanation there. I had ran across some of the history of persecution but didn't feel that it was complete enough for me to understand it. Thanks for sharing a piece of it and helping me to understand my research a little better.

When a country is going through civil war, it is easy to label one side as terrorists.
I am no expert, but based on what I have learned about Sikh's, they are peaceful and caring people. If you are hungry, they will feed you. Many churches will turn their back, not invite you in to sit down for a meal.

You need to obtain a much better understanding of Indian history. The statement that Sikhs are a pain in the butt to India is so completely wrong. The vast majority of the people in India killed in the freedom struggle of India were Sikhs. Sikhs were at one point over-represented in the Indian Army by a factor of 5; 2% of the Indian population is Sikh and the precentage of the Indian Army that was Sikh was something at its highest like 60% (off the top of my head). Today the Prime Minister of India is a Sikh. The head of the Army is a Sikh. People lose their way out of every group and that is absolutely regretful. The troubles in punjab in the 70-90's were a sad period in some way akin but probably more bloody than the Irish Troubles.

Sikhism is a man made religion like every other religion on Earth. God went through some trouble to make everything look natural so he could see what people would do free of him. Making up silly religions would defeat that purpose. Also an infinitely intelligent of supposed goodness wouldn't such a huge ego that demands worshiping by lower beings. Such a need would be a quality of an evil individual.

When religion becomes politicized, people die. Best to keep church and state separated!
