Waukesha Lawmaker Carrying Gun on Assembly Floor

Associated Press states that Bill Kramer began carrying gun because of current political tones.

State Rep. Bill Kramer, R-Waukesha, has been carrying during legislative sessions, according to an Associated Press report.

Kramer told the Associated Press he needs his Glock 26 at the Capitol because of the current political atmosphere.

Kramer had told WaukeshaNow in July that the state’s newly passed law that allowed for concealed carry permits was “a long time coming.”

The fact that he claims it is because of the current political environment is what scares me more than the fact he is carrying. Is this what we have come to in our political divisions?

He feels the need to carry a gun due to the political climate that he and his cronies created! Isn't that rich. Prime example of government at its worst. Creating situations to justify poor legislation & decisions. Sad times in this state!! Lord help us!!!!!

Well...this is alarming. I think this is why we have capital police. This just sounds like a horrible thing in the making. Republicans and Democrats alike have both gotten death threats. People who signed and circulated recall petitions have gotten death threats.
Someone should contact his opponent (http://www.facebook.com/margastateassembly) for comment.

He has the right like every LAW ABBIDING person in this state has the right to. The people we need to worry about are the CRIMNALS that do not have a concealed carry license.

I really think he must feel he needs it in case someone trys to sneak a camera in and take a shot of him. I guess the other reason might be that he thinks Nick Milroy or Kelda Helen Roys might attack him and he's not able to defend himself verbally.

Good for Bill. I understand why he would be concerned. He has seen bomb threats, fellow republicans and their family members threatened and even assaulted. Who knows what these unhinged lefties will do next? I would also protect myself if I were him

Besides, he is just exercising his own constitutional right to protect himself and his family. Why should being a member of government preclude you from doing this?

Keep up the great work Bill.

It is a sad day for the Legislature, and our fine State. He should be ashamed of himself, and the entire Legislature should also be ashamed for allowing it. What does it say about the level of discourse when behavior like this is condoned that can ONLY lead to the intimidation of opposing views? Loyal opposition and spirited debate are the keystones of effective democratic governance. We have come a long way, but apparently have much further to go.

So what about the thousands of Judges who carry guns across the country? Many thousands do as well as many lawyers. Is it okay for them but not for lawmakers?

I bet there are a number of others as well as staffers, and some on both sides of the isle who carry, they just have not been ratted out yet.

Every law abiding person has both the right and the obligation to protect themselves, law enforcement like the Capital police are for after the fact, after a crime. People who have been threatened don't need law enforcement report takers who show up at best many minutes after a crime, often hours are more accurate.

Most criminals intent on doing others harm think twice and look for unprotected targets when they know they might meet up with an individual willing to stand up for themselves. I applaud his willingness to be responsible for his own safety regardless of his political positions.

In you haven't noticed, Conceal and Carry are now LEGAL in this state. As long as he has registered the firearm, and taken an approved course and abides by the rules for various establisments under state law, he has right to defend himself. I;d be scared too if I had to wade through the endless pile of human debris in Madison who are constanly threatening and physcally any lawmaker who opposes their agnds. And oh yes, the ones who created this climate of discontent are the ones who continue to whine and threaten the Govenor with death threats, cheat on recall petitions by listing improper signatures or individulals as well as disrupt and threaten anyone who disagrees with their opinion. Their mantra is be "open minded as long as you agree with me." If you don't then your labeled an "idiot" or are looked upon not as enlightened as they are.

It's also time for Wisconsin to move forward.

Good man, Representative Bill Kramer!

Good people ought to be armed as they will, with wits and Guns and the Truth.

The conspiracy of ignorance only masquerades as common sense.

Mark, I generally agree with you, except that we don't register firearms in Wisconsin. No such animal exists. We only license people.

Wow, the name calling is rediculous. Why do the editors of this fine media outlet sensor posts when the "left" is the target, yet when the "right" is the target of name calling it's allowed to stay on this website?
Sorry Patch you've proven again that your in the tank like all other media.
I'm specifically referring to Terry Murphy's post where Representative Kramer's physical looks are compared to a child molester.
Wow that's mature. Grow up! If you can do better then run for office your self, or better yet put your profile picture up so we can critize how you look.

You know threats and verbal abuse are not limited to any one side. I am a 71 year old grandmother and retired teacher. No, I was never a member of the union..only fair share. I circulated recall petitions and endured untold verbal abuse and threats from Walker supporters. Keep civil folks on all sides of these issues.

Teachers in Milwaukee may face greater danger every day in the classroom than Rep. Kramer will ever face on the floor of the assembly. Should they also be allowed to bring guns into their workplaces if they have permits and feel threatened?

Yes, they should also protect themselves. Columbine never would have happened as well as many other school shootings if the teachers and staff were trained and armed.

The only case where an armed attacker was subdued alive without any campus killings was done by armed students on a college campus.

My grandfather as a child went to school every day with a gun at his side and a horse tied out front, as did other students and teachers. They even had shooting contests behind his school during breaks. No one ever came onto those campuses and threatened students or teachers, they knew both would be armed and trained to protect themselves.

We used to be a nation of responsible citizens able to protect ourselves, today we have been brain washed into being victims. I prefer my teachers be protectors not victims of crime.
