Tommy Thompson Announces He's Running for U.S. Senate

Large crowd shows up to support former Wisconsin governor, a Republican, in election campaign kick-off.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, a Republican, announced his plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Herb Kohl on Thursday in front of a large crowd of energetic supporters who came to back his campaign.

Thompson, who entered the room to cheers of “Tommy, Tommy” and music blaring, cited the nation’s growing debt and increased government spending, programs and regulations under President Barack Obama’s administration as reasons why he decided to seek election.

“I am not running on what we have accomplished in the past or to further a career,” Thompson said. “I am running to help America reclaim its future and its destiny – for my children and grandchildren and your children and grandchildren.”

Thompson’s announcement was made at Weldall Manufacturing, which has recently expanded operations in Waukesha. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel pointed out Thursday that while Thompson had been critical of stimulus money, Weldall received the federal funds to assist with its expansion.

Meanwhile, both the Republican Party of Wisconsin and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin issued statements about Thompson’s campaign.

"With today’s announcement by former Governor Tommy Thompson, voters have gained another strong conservative choice in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate,” said Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brad Courtney in a prepared statement. “Thompson joins an impressive field of GOP candidates with proven track records of job creation and fiscal responsibility. We look forward to contrasting the accomplishments of the GOP field with the failures of Barack Obama and Tammy Baldwin.”

Former Congressman Mark Neumann and State Rep. Jeff Fitzgerald also plan on seeking election in the 2012 U.S. Senate race.

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s communications director, Graeme Zielinski, took Thompson to task in an e-mail to Wisconsin reporters, saying the Thompson had changed positions in areas of stem cell research, health care reforms, concealed carry and other areas.

“In Tommy Thompson’s latest bid for the spotlight of public office, Thompson has had to flip-flop, bend, contort, and in many cases simply run away from his previous record on the issues,” Zielinski said.

Given the options, I think if someone chose to legally change their name to "None of the Above" and managed to get enough signatures to get on the ballot, they'd have a pretty good shot at it.

Since the Tea Party has taken over the GOP, Tommy will have a tough time getting nominated.

Can a law be written that would prevent this guy from double-, triple-, or whatever-amount-of- dipping he'd be doing here? How many PUBLIC pensions will this guy take before he sails off into the sunset???

Yes. It is called an election. If the people don't want a candidate they should not vote for that candidate and there will be no double, triple etc.....

It's remarkable how deep the Republican bench is. Any of those running would well serve as Senator. Tommy might be a little long in the tooth at this point, but certainly is better for Wisconsin than sleepy Herb, and by far more accomplished than hair-on-fire Baldwin.

That may be true, Gearhead, but these days in order to win an election (one where the Democrats and the fence sitters aren't asleep at the wheel, anyways), you're better off with a hairfire and a healthy dose of promising people everything's going to be okay if we just roast the 1% on a spit. A perennial loser, the Brett Favre of politics or a guy whose already got a target on his back because he's been labeled as one of Dr. Evil's henchmen probably aren't going to cut it in the general. The same people who voted for Obama because it made them feel good about themselves to do so (the fence sitters) will vote for Baldwin for that same reason. The Dems are all fired up. Given that, if we're stuck with those 3 only, I'd like to see Tommy get the nod, go out there and finally get kicked to the curb, if only so we don't have him jumping in and making a mess of every election between now and the time he's finally reunited with his brother Ed, G-d rest his soul.

@Bob... you make an interesting point, but I don't quite see it that way. At the end of the day, people will rally behind a doer. The Republican bench is rich with doers. Most folks have seen past Obama's siren song. We aren't buying it. Baldwin is even further left of Russ Russ, without his charming, but fake "awe-shucks" shtick. 2010 election was only the first wave of shellacking. 2012 should pretty much finish the job.

Greg, they don't rally behind a doer if they don't like what that person is going to do. The soft middle is called that, precisely because they're soft. Stuff like being part of the 99% that's being victimized by 1% appeals to them. Victimized teachers and "attacks" on the sacred cow of public education appeal to them. The Dems have done a marvelous job of portraying the Republicans as perennial puppy kickers for those who never get much below skin deep on any issue.

You've got two on that list there that are easy targets for their ties to the righty-right part of the party, and a third who twists with the wind, but who at the same time is every guy or gal with a camera phone and ambitions to post something on YouTube that gets 250K+ hits dream come true.

The one guy who's charismatic enough to get past the stereotypes and who could survive the onslaught of attacks, despite being accused of being Ayn Rand's illegitimate nephew twice removed, has declined.

If we're being honest at this point, frankly, we got nothin'.

Um, expect Tommy will never make it past the medievalists that vote in the GOP primaries, precisely because he is a "doer" (which can be taken many ways).

The right wing doesn't want the government to do anything, regardless of the negative effect that might have on economy and our international competitiveness.

Tommy, the father of embryonic stem cell research no matter how much he denies it now ala Romney will be in trouble with the real boss of the GOP, the jug-jawed Barbara Lyons with Wisconsin Right to Lie.

If the Republican Party is smart they will go with Thompson. Neaumann and Fitz are both DOA as they only appeal to the right wing of the party. Tommy can draw moderate Democrats and independents.

Unless someone else comes forward (can't imagine who at this point) or he shoots himself if the foot early on, Tommy will get the nod. I don't think he can overcome the novelty factor feel-good of Tammy Baldwin, even if he does manage to get all the way to the end, major gaffe-free. Baldwin stumbled a bit coming out of the gate with that "ad" that pretty much tagged her as an ultra-lefty, but since this is a big deal on a national level for the Dems, she'll have the best of handlers on her side. It's hers to lose, essentially.

The fact that BOTH are state Senators (russ & herb ) voted AGAINST making english the official language of our country, I'l take TOMMY anyday ! Democrats will snap if he gets the nod, cause when it comes to welfare, Tommy don't play that. Quite frankly, I'm sick of paying for the dregs and Tommy will help the WORKING man......or woman.

@Bill Clinton...I don't understand why you think it is so important to make English the official language. Within a fairly short period of time most non English speakers learn English. By the second generation the vast majority are either English only or bilingual speakers. You're making a whole lot about nothing.

If you think Tommy is your answer to welfare, think again. On this score you're just wrong.

Besides the fact that Tommy will never make it through the whacko right wing GOP primary because he believes in technological progress, a lot of this mess with day car providers making dump load trucks full of money can be traced to Tommy's "reforms."

@Bill Clinton...I don't think we need an official language at all. If you look at our nation's history, we became very close to becoming a German speaking nation. With the Hispanic growth, who knows; in less than a century the U.S. may be primarily Spanish speaking. There are far too many other things to be concerned about other than what language we're speaking.

We're going to have to move to Asia or Europe to have our kids learn English. Considering they start to learn English when they enter school, most of these kids will know how to speak English when they migrate to the US.

For Craig:
Additional question marks are used for emphasis. I assume you mistook the hyphen key (after the first "is" in your comment) for the period key. The comma key (after the word "language") was also used for the period key. The period key is used to set off complete sentences. Perhaps a review of the concept of "Run-On Sentences" would not be remiss.

Regarding the language issue, if for no other reason, the cost of printing, posting and publishing official documents in multiple languages is costly.
It is the responsibility of the guest or immigrant to learn the language or provide their own accurate translation. If a business elects to be bilingual or multilingual for their own gain that is their choice in the capitalist society. I as a tax payer do not want the additional expense.
