This is Nellie. While she isn't necessarily a 'puppy' by definition, she is new to our family. We adopted her this last December in 2011. Nellie's story is quite special. She was a research beagle for the first three years of her life. She lived in a cage while being poked and tested on and never got to experience being a 'real' dog until we adopted her through a wonderful rescue group called Roll Over Animal Rescue in Illinois. Even though she's three years old, she is experiencing many firsts like all puppies do. The weather, the snuggles, the toys, the walks, special treats, and everything else a beloved pet gets to experience. She has brought much joy into our life, it is almost like she rescued us.

It's your puppy's day to shine! What makes today so special? It's National Puppy Day.

According to the website, since its start in 2006 National Puppy Day celebrates the magic and unconditional love puppies give us, but "more importantly, it's a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills, as well as further our mission for a nation of puppy-free pet stores."

Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce puppies without concern for their physical, social or emotional needs, according to the Wisconsin Humane Society. Usually the puppies are sold to the public through the Internet, ads or pet shops. The site says, "Dogs from puppy mills are inbred or overbred, and receive minimal veterinary care, poor quality food and water, and very little socialization."

In honor of National Puppy Day submit your photos to our gallery telling us your puppy's name and their hometown.

Jen - your story is so cute! What a cute pup, it must be fun to see him do all those things!! Although sad for your Nellie to have been through all of that!

Nellie has adapted quite well given her past. She comes out of her shell more and more each day. She truly has been a blessing, and you can tell she is thoroughly enjoying her new found freedom! :-)
