Sequestration Budget Cuts: Which WI Counties Have the Most Federal Employees?

More than 180 federal employees who work in Waukesha County could potentially be affected by sequester, which is slated to start Friday.

Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick in have the potential to affect more than 185 federal employees working in Waukesha County.

Barring any kind of deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade.

The numbers in the graph above show the number of federal employees in Wisconsin by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment.

It compiles the data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

While much has been written on how the current sequestration battle in Washington could affect the national economy, these numbers are meant to give readers a sense of the sequestration at the local level.

Of the 185 federal employees in Waukesha County, 77 work for theU.S. Department of the Treasury and 25 are employed by the Social Security Administration.

On Sunday, the Obama administration released a report that showed Wisconsin could see more than $27 million in federal cuts if the sequester takes effect. And a report released this week by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators said the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee could lose about $40,000 in federal work study grants.

No one knows for certain what the sequestration cuts will mean exactly. Even if the federal cuts are enacted, the full effects would not be felt immediately. The government is required to alert impacted agencies of what cuts are to be made and what workers are to be furloughed.

It should be noted, however, that even the suggestion of cuts and the notification process itself could be felt in some community economies.

Uncertainty for federal workers means they are likely to tighten their belts until they see what the cuts look like — and how long they last. It means those workers will likely spend less money at local shops and restaurants. In some communities there may be only a handful of federal workers and the impacts may be small.

But, as these figures show, in other counties federal employees number in the thousands and in those places the sequestration could become a more significant pain, particularly if it drags on for weeks or months.

These "cuts" are miniscule.
They aren't actually cuts, but reductions to increases in spending.
How miniscule are they you may ask?
It equates to the average American family cutting $2.50 from their annual spending.
Devastating I know....

Best I have seen it explained:

According to the CBO, the sequester will force the government to cut around $40 Billion in outlays between Friday and September 30th.

Think of it this way. You have a credit card with a $10,000 limit. You currently have a $5,000 balance on the card. On Friday, the credit card company cancels your card and demands immediate payment. You adjust your budget to pay off the $5,000 balance. To the media, however, the credit card company has just cut your budget by $10,000, since that was the amount you had been authorized to spend.

So, on Friday, the government has to trim around $40 billion over the next seven months. This represents just over 1% of total federal spending. Unfortunately, the bias against cutting federal spending is such that the media can't even be honest about that.

Comparing a credit card to the economy to the United States economy is simply a monumental oversimplification and a false equivalency…

Your loss of a credit card only affects YOU.

The loss of $85B to the economy affects almost EVERYONE; in addition, you have to carry those effects out for 10-years, at an additional $85B per year.

I have never seen any economy grow and flourish without massive consumer, government, business and Wall Street spending, research and production; perhaps this is the new Republican Economics.

Finally, for those of you demanding a return to 2008 spending levels, please consider:

POPULATION OF THE USA:

2008 = 305M

2013 = 316M and growing daily

I does effect me, in a positive way. We are running somewhere around 101% debt to GDP. For an economy to grow we need to get down from that, way down. Population has increased but revenues have not kept up with spending. Huge deficits and increasing debt is not a good thing, don't try to sell it as it is.

You still didn't refute that this fiscal year we are cutting $40 billion, not $85 billion.

I do not really know where you are pulling your numbers from; candidly, I would probably not want to know, as I am sure your head is there too.

“I does effect me, in a positive way. We are running somewhere around 101% debt to GDP.”

ONE: “It does effect me,” should be It does affect me,

TWO: Current % of Government spending to GDP is 40%

I do not know what you are drinking, shooting, smoking or whatever current psychological condition(s) you are presenting, however, you are in very dire straits.

The $40B or 85B needs no refutation, as they will be backtracked to September 2012.

Steve said: " We are running somewhere around 101% DEBT to GDP."
(emphasis added)

I didn't think I had to explain this to a "former Mensa", but SPENDING is what the government pays out, typically reported on an annual basis. DEBT is an accumulation of budget deficits (when the government spend more than we take in on an annual basis)

40% of annual spending is Government related.
GDP is at 101% (actually closer to 103% now).

Both numbers are very alarming!!!

The Anti-Alinsky –

The “Total Government Debt as a Percent of GDP” is currently at around 127%.

http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/total_debt_chart

I am not overly concerned with that figure, as that is a long-range opportunity, and no matter what we do today, that figure is not going to change for years. That is a long-term issue.

I am far more concerned with the JOBS situation NOW! We need to get people to work, as that helps us massively in the short term, and will drive EVERYTHING! The deficit is and will be with us for many years to come.

JOBS will help to alleviate that far more than all the “cutting”, “crying” and “obstructionism” that our bought-and-paid-for-Congress has been doing for the last 2+ years.

As usual, they are focusing on the wrong issue...

Just so you don’t eat your gun in the near future…

“Viewed as a percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) government debt shows a different aspect. At 56 percent of GDP in 1985, debt decreased as a percent of GDP until the mid 1990s when it peaked at 81.4 percent of GDP in 1996. Then a steady decline in debt as a percent of GDP set in for the rest of the 1990s, declining to 71.6 percent of GDP in 2000. But debt resumed a climb in the 2000s reaching 81 percent of GDP at the peak of the business cycle in 2007."

"In the Crash of 2008 government debt increased sharply to bail out the banks and to provide "stimulus" to the economy. Debt reached 104 percent of GDP in 2009. But debt is expected to plateau at about 122 percent of GDP in the next few years.”

John (if that is your real name), you are one odd duck. First you cite a non-governmental site that out does the number Steve provided, but then draw a different conclusion. To top it off your citations don’t make sense:
“The “Total Government Debt as a Percent of GDP” is currently at around 127%.”
“But debt is expected to plateau at about 122 percent of GDP in the next few years.”
We currently pay $220 Billion in interest payments every year. What happens to that number when interests rates go up? And it will only get worse if Moody’s downgrades us again.
There is absolutely no argument about getting people back to work. Conservatives have been saying that for YEARS!!! But there are two things that are preventing that.
1) The government just taxed many of the largest job producers, which means they have that much less money to hire new workers.
2)Why should someone go out and work when the government gives them everything they need? Obama-housing, Obama-bucks for food, Obama-phones to call their friends, Obama-care to pay the doctor to put a band-aid on their boo-boo.

Debt is a HUGE problem. More importantly, the cause is an even bigger problem. While the debt we have stays with us until we pay it off, we can slow the annual deficits and keep the debt as low as possible. All it takes is a little dedication and discipline.

The Anti-Alinsky –

I am so proud of you; you have succeeded in memorizing ALL of the TP/GOP “Talking Points.”

Debt is only a “HUGE” problem for YOU and your cabal; JOBS are where I am focused.

The pennies taken from billionaires and millionaires, you call “job producers” is laughable, and utterly meaningless...

YOU and your TP cohorts could do me and the Patch a huge flavor favor and give us all the benefit of your vast economic knowledge when you make a reference to Debt or Deficit, as you use them interchangeably and very loosely.

Define what you mean by Debt in the context of government.

For example:

“National Debt: Strictly speaking, the national debt is the total of federal, state, and local debt.”

“Gross Federal Debt: That’s the gross amount of debt issued by the US Treasury. “Debt held by the public” and “debt held by federal government accounts”
“The gross debt of the general government is composed of three items: debt held by the Federal Reserve System and therefore monetized, debt owed to government agencies (e.g., Social Security), and debt held by the public, including foreign governments.”

IF you folks are going to play the master illusionist, let us find some common ground.

Precision is a wonderful thing… most of the time I think that logic is a diversion for you.

It is just a ploy. The Obummer regime is going to make this as painful as possible to their employees and to the public so we all come crying back to them throwing money at them to make it all better. Instead of making the "horrific" cuts to TSA, Health inspectors, schools, teachers, public safety, etc, etc, they could easily wipe out some of the middle management (4 supervisors to 6 workers), travel, use video conferences (like the taxpaying world) instead of flying supervisors around the country to useless conferences.
A few others, end the constant campainging. You won the election, we get that, now shut the hell up and do your job.! Cut the Foreign aid, end some of the waste in all programs, the list is endless.
The federal government wastes more money than these cuts are every month yet we just keep allowing it. Time to stand up and demand spending goes back to 2008 levels and then work it from there.

You assertions about “Green Energy” are as simple and incorrect as your inane credit card analogy to the United States economy. [90B was set aside, less than 25B has been spent]

“It found that renewables accounted for 44% of all new energy generation capacity added last year, up from 34% in 2010 and just 10.3% back in 2004.”

Please cite some sources:

Obama care to add $6 trillion to long term debt” [Source?]

It has to be just orgasmic in your little fantasy world, where every absurd thought is committed to text, thrown out to the Patch, without any substantiation whatsoever.
