Report: Mayor's Paychecks no Longer Directly Deposited into New Day Fund

Questions surround mayor's promise to work for half pay.

Waukesha Mayor Jeff Scrima promised to work for half pay when he ran for mayor in 2010, but then created a charitable fund where he donates half his paycheck. But the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has found that Scrima no longer deposits his paycheck into the account via city processes.

The article in the Journal Sentinel shows the mayor is not releasing records about the funding in the New Day in Waukesha Foundation. The article includes a response from the mayor.

Scrima recently pledged to donate money from his New Day in Waukesha fund to help restore the former bus pavilion that houses the Waukesha Farmers’ Market.

Should the mayor release records about his charitable fund to the public given his campaign promise in 2010? Tell us in the comments.

Is anyone really shocked by this?

Exactly. This was a tax ruse for his business. He should be ashamed of himself but he isn't.
He has his family and friends writing editorials in the Freeman and comments here.
He is, in my opinion not fit to be mayor or anything else for that matter.
Like I originally said at the City Hall there is a joke that goes.....what do you call a little joke....Jeff Scrima. Nuff said.

Sarah the mayor doesn't have a business, it's his dads-- as were most (if not all) of the accomplishments he claimed while running for office. Now that he isn't "working" in his dads business any longer his dad probably wants to stop paying him... But there's a dilemma-- he can't give his salary away AND expect to live off of it.

The Waukesha County Community Foundation, of which the Mayor's fund is part of, as a policy does not release the amount donars contribute. The mayor said he will give a full accounting when projects are announced and completed. Best to not jump to negative conclusions here. The mayor may surprise us.

One, I'm not his family..Two, I'm not a personal friend of his..I have however, written quite a few editorials and left comments on his behalf..I think for the situation that presents itself at Waukesha City hall (ie: all the gossip, games, childish behavior) displayed by the majority of the current Common Council, Mayor Scrima has done his best to overcome..How much money did Mayor Nelson contribute out of his own personal pay for the well-being of the city? But yet, you all somehow still compare the two..I bet if I walked up to Jeff Scrima, and didn't act like a jerk (which I'm sure you nay-sayers are guilty of), and asked what was the deal with his OWN SELF MADE DONATION FUND FOR THE CITY OF WAUKESHA, he'd tell me..I'd bet 20 bucks on it right now..And maybe had either of you read the original article from JS Online, you would have gotten the full story..Instead you relied on the Waukesha Patch and all it's apparent in-roads with the Common Council..The only joke I'm laughing at is sheep-like people like the ones above..You should have said "Baaahh" instead of Nuff said at the end..

Why bring Mayor Nelson into this? He was a school teacher prior to becoming mayor-- you can't blame him for not being born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

It's incredible to me that no one on the Mayor's team of "smart people" have looked up the term "conflict of interest". Two advisers to the fund now sit on the Plan Commission. No one knows if they have contributed to the New Day Fund or not. Wouldn't it be interesting if some condo developers made contributions to the fund shortly before the Mayor proposed the garbage fee. Smart politicians try to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. For some reason, the Mayor seems to embrace it. The Mayor's motive may be good, but intentional or not, it now appears that the way to get something done in the City is through the New Day Fund. Not being open about the Fund's finances only adds fuel to the fire.

Some bloggers just can't help but being negative. The more negative they are, the better Scrima will look when he announces positive collaborative community projects which he helped fund.

Fortunately good journalists don't fall into that trap. Report the facts please. Scrima has another two years to provide detail and contribute to the community.

And I like the idea of Waukesha getting new welcome signs and renovating the public Farmers market building.

Do you like the idea of Scrima lying during his campaign saying he would reduce his salary? A salary reduction is not the same as the ploy he is using.

Scrima is a non educated person and it shows. His lack of honesty makes him a real politician.

Sorry, but I say it the way I see it. Some of you have been fooled, I haven't been..

The naysayers above are out of touch.  How many other people have created a community fund to benefit the city? Obviously Tony Bryant and Rick Congdon, who are both on Mayor Scrima's fund steering committee, know and feel that it's a good idea.

Out of touch? The naysayers are not the ones that created their own conflict of interest. Wanting to create a community fund is a noble idea. The Mayor needs to decide how he wants to serve the city. The way he is handling the New Day Fund only opens him up to criticism. He needs to realize that he took this responsibility on when he decided to run for Mayor.

If I had a rich dad who would pay my way in life I would start a benefit for the city... Just like Mayor Scrima did!

As a public official who made campaign promises based on his salary, Mayor Scrima is commanding little public support in his response. He should answer the questions honestly and directly. He also needs a new publicist immediately.
