Anti-Walker Protesters Are Planning to Show at Hart Park
Picketers could be ushered away, though, because event organizers have also rented that part of the park where they intend to protest.
Protests of some kind are being planned Saturday afternoon to counter the Celebrate Walker rally in Hart Park in Wauwatosa, according to several sources.
But they may be stymied if their anticipated protests get too loud or impede anyone's access to the pro-Walker event, as its organizers have already laid claim to the same turf the protesters want to use.
We Are Milwaukee, the consortium of labor and social-left groups that organized and staged a Recall Walker rally and signature-gathering event Nov. 15 in Wauwatosa, has calls for protests on its Facebook page.
The group also created an events page on Facebook called Stand Against 1% Walker to promote a protest, but in the past 24 hours it has been largely taken over by posts and comments from Walker supporters.
The page includes a poster and text publicizing a protest from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Hart Park. It calls for protesters to gather at North 70th and Chestnut streets, which is within the park and immediately west of the area being barricaded off for Celebrate Walker.
However, Onward Wisconsin, the political action committee formed to plan and promote Celebrate Walker, has also rented that part of the park stretching all the way to North 72nd Street.
That would put anti-Walker protesters at 70th and Chestnut squarely in the middle of a reserved area — reserved by their political opponents.
Onward Wisconsin spokesman Paris Procopis said that his group does not currently plan to barricade the area between 70th and 72nd streets and will not expel anyone who does not go overboard trying to disrupt their event.
If there are serious disruptions, though, event organizers might act to remove people, he said.
"We reserve the right to exercise our permit," Procopis said. "Everyone has heard their message; now it's our turn to be heard."
Procopis acknowledged that no one can reserve the sidewalks along 70th Street, only the park commons, and that if protesters stick to the sidewalks and don't impede anyone's access, they will likely not be challenged. But he said that police had told his people they would act as necessary to protect the public safety.
Efforts to reach individuals identified as protest organizers were unsuccessful.
Ted Kraig of Council 10, representing teachers in a number of west and south suburban school districts, was a co-coordinator of the November recall rally but said he was not involved in organizing an anti-Walker rally on Saturday.
Kraig confirmed, however, that a protest effort was being planned by other members of We Are Milwaukee. He said that the lead was being taken by Peter Rickman, who also was a coordinator of the November recall petition rally.
Rickman did not return phone calls Wednesday.
An anonymous e-mail forwarded to Wauwatosa Patch referred to gathering a group of protesters outside the park and then entering the park for a picket line and protest rally. It called for recipients to forward the message through their networks.
Walker fans are taking a wait-and-see attitude toward the possibility of a turnout of protesters confronting them. With a lot of big names on stage and a crowd of 1,000 or more to protect, though, they and police will keep a close eye on the situation.
"This grass-roots event was born of a small group of people united through social media and bound by a passion for politics," said Meghan Duffey, a coordinator of Celebrate Wisconsin. "It is our intent to exercise our First Amendment right by collectively expressing our freedom of speech, as many others have in Madison.
"All we ask is that the left respect our rights, as we respect theirs by not ruining their gatherings with unruly counter-protesting."

The 'lunatic fringe' runs on emotion. Their argument and delivery is emotional. Yet, emotion does sell newspapers, etc., which is why, I suppose, that the local media is rather complicit in giving unequal voice to the anti-whatever campaigns. Ask any 'recall' supporter to justify why a recent election by the majority must be reversed and a sitting, duly elected Governor ousted, and they will not be able to reply with quantitative, lucid, factual argument; their reply will be based on emotionally fueled falsehoods, misconceptions and leftist rant. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally against the 2-party system in general, but I am for less spending, less taxing, less intrusion, less oversight, less government. The 'anti's' are for all of those things, and in my experience, when bluntly asked to simply quantify their positions, I have yet to hear an argument that justifies the removal of this sitting Governor that is not founded in emotional heresy. Sorry, anti's, you've been heard, now have the same respect the 'pro' supporters gave you when you created problems that didn't exist, problems that cost (with mounting costs) all of us taxpayers millions in unnecessary services invoices. This weekend, it's your civic obligation to respect your fellow taxpayers and shut the f' up, and put a cork in your emotional rant. If you spent as much energy in creating opportunity and employment as you do in demanding to be on the dole, I'd probably listen to you. But I've heard enough from you.

Ray , Ray . Let me start with one fact. Not the lunitic fringe. Many who voted for Walker have signed the recall petition. Another fact and probably the most important. When the senators left the state the people of Wisconsin spoke in overwhelming numbers. Both dems & Reps. The gov. refused to listen to the people of his state. The gov. has been very heavy handed in his attemt to fullfill the ALEC agenda. He was not elected for that purpose. I object to $7 mil. being spent on voter ID. Show me the prosecutions that warrant such measures. Fitzgerald stated on FOX that the goal is to stop union dues from going to the dem. party so that Obama can be defeated. That is an agenda . Not in the best intrest of the state. Who has really divided this state?

Richard, my use of 'lunatic fringe' was in reply to Dirk. Yet, I do consider the lack of reasoning for what I have personally observed to be an emotional lunatic fringe as a generally accurate assessment of the brainwashed sheep of the Democratic political party brand affiliation. Democrats would vote Hannibal Lechter as Chubby Girl Scout Leader if he was running for it as a Democrat. As much as I hate the delusional herd loyalty to ANY political party, I don't see this as much on the Rep. side as I do the Dem. side. Reps will at least reject someone who claims to be a Rep for whatever reason they saw on TV that gets drummed into their heads repetitively as a quasi-transgression, like getting laid or some likewise absurd transgressional invention. Dems on the other hand will vote for a man JUST because he is a Dem and there is nothing that candidate could do to get himself on the side of disloyalty by the deluded herd. Clinton got laid by an employee in the oval office and Dems still supported him. Their brand is 'the common man', 'the victim', 'the downtrodden' and they NEED the constituency of victimhood to stoke the fires of emotion, which sells their brand. If you really want to know who divided this state, look to everyone who votes A or B, instead of freely voting for an independant free thinking American who isn't beholden to the stockholders of the brand for which he is shilling. Or scheckeling, perhaps.

Richard, calling me divisive based on my comments is like calling a boxing referee divisive. The 2 party system is like 2 gladiators pitted against each other at the bidding of the emperor, for the distraction of the masses and amusement of the emperor. I'm guessing you may be one of those people who simply cannot think out of the box after years and years of socio-political brainwashing that may make it impossible for you to conceptualize a free vote outside of the 2-party system. Divisivness is built in to the system. It IS the system. Our best choice is to transcend the divisive paradigm and come to an agreement that the 2 party system is an imperial feign that dupes Americans into compromising away their freedom, vote by vote. If I mention the words 'Constitution' or 'Liberty', I may be labeled a Libertarian, and if I was to associate with any party, that's the closest one I've seen that's a match so far; a party that actually wants actual freedom, particularly freedom from the fatal flaws in full bloom in the A v. B choice, Dem OR Rep. I say F' 'em BOTH. They BOTH have crashed our country and forward agendea of the suspense of freedom, each one hammering away at the others' financial interests at the expense of our country's very existence and the future liberties and functionalities of we the people.

Richard, you're right. I did wander off point. Such is the blogosphere. To address your points, you've made some wide brush strokes, but again, such is the blogoshpere. I don't completely agree that there was heavy-handedness out of the ordinary; it's just that the austerity measures legilsated upon require action. As far as the ALEC agenda, I simply don't agree. In no way do I feel in this world that requires ID for most citizenry mobility, voter ID is anything less than standard accountability. Who profits by NO voter ID? Those whose ends justify the means, quite simply. Those who travel to WI to vote unlawfully, those who vote for the dead, those who vote for those who did not vote, those who vote in multiple districts, etc. Voter ID stop that. A state ID card is free. I would add that if someone has a mobility problem getting a free state ID card, wouldn't they have a similar mobility problem getting to the polls? As a concession, a free state ID card should be and could be issued at an ALIS terminal at the local cop shop or city hall, with presentation of a birth certificate, military ID, etc., etc. If you object to $7mil spent on election integrity measures, you should object to the $30 mil spent on stopping the admin that is trying to spend the $7 mil to protect elections. Elected officials generally won't prosecute election fraud because they have been elected. That's a little like the junkies running the pharmacy.

Ray-Ray you are still dodging my reasoning for signing the recall petition. You did however spend 80% of your blog talking about voter ID fraud . I am only aware of 1 case in wisc. where there was a prosecution. An elderly man told his friend that he may of made a mistake and voted twice. Of course his friend turned him in. 7 million dollars to protect our selves from this!! The real reason for voter ID is to disenfranchise voters. Case in point.. In Texas a gun liscense is OK but a public ass. ID isn't. You can spin anything but Karl Rove stated the intent of the new voter ID laws. To help win elections by holding down the vote. I try hard to see both sides of any issue, and I agree with some of what Walker is doing , he , however, has overstepped. The dems must provide a good candidate or Walker will remain.

Richard, I don't think I dodged your comments. You talked of the ALEC agenda, which I think is about voter ID. I don't listen to the pundits on TV and I don't listen to TV's 'gladiator' media. I imagine that whatever Rove said was a snippet taken out of context, or spun somehow to influence the 'Rove is evil' crowd. After all, this is what 'gladiator' media entertainment shows do. They pit rep v dem brand loyalists against each other. That does butter the bread in advertising revenues. Does Rove have so much influence? How could he, if he so villianized? It's a joke on the lot of TV watchers who believe they are seeing truth, when in reality they are not seeing truth, but what the people who product the show want them to see and then believe as truth, from the alter of the priests of the NWO. On your other point, I don't think that when the Dem senators left, the masses were speaking at all. I believe it was the Dem senators speaking in character at the behest of their handlers, the financial influences buttering their bread. WEAC, SEIU, Teamsters, AFL-CIO, etc. Lots of money in those union dues for those who work for those unions. The cost run-ups they create are but collateral damage for the rewards they reap for their own profit. The cost to the taxpayers to put their pay for play guy in the governor's mansion is of no concern to them, so long as their revenue steam flows. Blame, then oust Walker for this? To quote The Godfather's Hyman Roth, "He's small potatoes".

2) Those on the right broke laws as they tore up signed re-call petitions.

What side was it that protested a Special Olympics event?
What side was it that has initiated several recalls of duly elected public officials over a single issue as opposed to a dereliction of duty?
What side was it that made the Kloppenburg v Prosser election a referendum against Walker and his policies and lost?
What side was it that ... you can fill in the rest, as this list is quite literally endless.

@Adam -
What do your two 'matters of fact' have to do with the right allegedly interfering with the so-called 'solidarity singers' at the Capitol in Madison?
And regarding your 'facts,'
1) Do 'peaceful protestors' really shout profanities and fighting words while carrying signs depicting their 'enemy' as being akin to Adolf Hitler and the like? Or pour beer over the head of someone that they disagree with? Or… the list is endless here. If that's your definition of 'peaceful,' then all I can say is wow! Also, Walker only ever said it was an idea that was floated but instantly rejected. As a leader, you explore all potential avenues of resolution, especially when several politicians were receiving threats of death and violence at the time and the capitol wasn't secured - it could have been very easy for some nut to have snuck in and detonated a bomb. I'm glad that Walker was open to considering all options and dismissed that one as immediately as he did - it shows openmindedness to unconventional solutions.
2) And those on the left did the exact same thing to the recall efforts that were launched by those on the right against 3 of the fleeing 14, so how are you using this to hold out your side as being so much better than the other side exactly? Bit hypocritical of you, but I guess that's par for the course from the left.

Fact of the matter is that when the left holds their little rallies, there are rarely if ever mass counter protests planned by the right, as the person on the ground reporting from Madison during the signature turn in events indicated a zero presence of pro-Walker supporters at such events.
And yet, every time the right wants to hold a little celebration, the left constantly has to organize a mass counter protest. That's pretty sad and clearly indicative that the right is far more supportive of allowing the left's voices to be heard, but all the left ever wants to do is attempt to drown out the voices of the right. That is a FACT that is proven by this article.

"recall supporters have been subjected to death threats, many of them captured on video." - hmmm.. just like Walker and several Republican legislators have been subjected to death threats as captured by photos of signs, in videos, and on facebook and other internet websites.
"in the world where we boo soldiers" - ummm… I hate to break it to you, but its those on the left that do this, just as it was those on the left who spit on our troops returning home from Vietnam and shouting things like 'baby killer' at them.

Yes, the prowalker people were here in Madison last year it's just that their numbers were so small compared to the massive crowds that it was unremarkable. Some media reports covered it--spending time on the 14 tea bags that showed up in the crowd of thousands. I remember a guy dressed up to look like a tough Harley guy--black leather, tattoos etc. yelling at me "You're the same ones who protested Viet Nam." Well, I wasn't alive then, but would have protested that boondogle if I could have. I guess he thought he got a jab in?? I also saw a small band of them when I was taking a break sitting in Starbucks. They were there but they were mostly ignored because their numbers were so small. There was a day that they bussed some of them in and I think they were able to fill about two thirds of a bus. Still miniscule and not noticeable in the huge crowds that showed up.

Can you quantify your statistical allusion? What percentage of the jobs created that you allude to were government jobs (not sustainable)? What percent were private sector jobs (contributing and sustainable)? Can you support your argument with fact, or are you citing something you heard on a website that can't be reconciled? If your argument is true in essence, can you agree that the enormous tax load placed on so many levels of our income dollars in WI, a reality that was in play long before this current Governor's service began, may contribute to such a state-to-state comparison? What I'm asking is that, parity not existing in state tax loads, could it be that states with across-the-board lower tax loads offer more opportunity for speed in economic recovery than those with a greater general tax burden? If given a 3-state choice, would you start a corporation in Nevada, Texas, or in WI? If your citing ends up being based in the majority on private sector jobs, could the state's non-parital tax loads be a more significant factor than is a Governor who has sat for a few months?

Richard, I disagree with your logic that 'red state' means pay for play. The 2-party system is flawed as such in all states where party political agenda is advanced and compromised as a bargaining chip, with only those with financial interests represented. And that would be all 50 of them. ONLY pay for play has representation. Ever try to get a court appointed lawyer for a civil matter? Nope, gotta pay to play. The poor? How about the number of people 'poor' programs employ-the admin, the vendors and suppliers, etc., Pay for play interests. The justice system? How about those who profit from the court and incarceration system? The vendors and suppliers, the insurers, etc.,etc. Now that everything but sitting on your hands is illegal, it all comes down to pay for play interests. Environmental concerns? Who profits from action? Who profits from no action? Safety laws like mandatory insurance, etc. Who profits? Whatever it is in front of the legislature, you can be assured that it is a pay for play endeavor. Follow the money, as the old saying goes. You can't say with a straight face that Doyle's administration, in this blue state, was not pay for play; it was, as was Thompson's, Earl's, Lucy's, Knowles, etc., etc. On a side note tangent, the state colors are reversed. The blue staters are more likely a bunch of reds. (There you have MY rhetorical contribution.)

Lets put the blame of job loss and slow job grow where it belongs. It is not because of the governor or our president. They are the ones saddled with the monumental problem created by all the people of this nation that DIDN'T WANT TO LIVE WITHIN THEIR MEANS. They wouldn't have been cool or very popular with the "in crowd of 2002" if they did. The ones that would rather eat Mac & Cheese and hot dogs every night, while living in a home they knew they couldn't afford from the get go. Oh yes, I know what I am talking about. Now who's living, in a too small of an apartment, with only one car, with credit debt and bad credit up to their eyeballs, crying about that bad President Obama while eating their Ramen Noodles? Hey, maybe it's all your fault for not spending your money on our state and local businesses. It's easy to blame someone. It's not so easy to come up with the right or fair solution out of this mess. Give those men some credit. They at least decided on their own, to stand up to the challenge.

In October the dems put forward several jobs bills and were shut down, in fact, the republicans only had the assembly open for one day in September then closed down. Fitzgerald blamed it on the recalls, but how did the recalls prevent them from working? How did that cause them to close the assembly?

SHAME! This is not a news piece, it is a liberal promotional piece for the anti-Walker protesters, going so far as to provide the link to the facebook page, providing the planned meeting place...etc. News is supposed to be impartial. Shame on you for this agenda-driven piece, Mr. Price.

Have you actually read any of the several stories I wrote about the Celebrate Walker rally? Such as the first one, which was the first story anyone wrote about it? Which included exactly the same kind of links to their Facebook page and event page? Or the video report I did showcasing Jerrid Madden, the 16-year-old featured speaker? Or the one I published several hours before this one, about the security and traffic control measures the pro-Walker people were taking? Or, for that matter, this story, which quotes nobody from the anti-Walker side but does quote not one but two Celebrate Walker organizers? I have bent over backward to provide coverage to Walker supporters of their rally that is as extensive and balanced as the coverage that was given to the Recall Walker side when they rallied here in November. And, by the way, the purpose of using links in political stories such as this is not promote beliefs or attendance but to lead astute, careful and sometimes skeptical readers back to our sources so that they may judge for themselves the legitimacy and accuracy of our reporting.

Mr. Price--I almost thought that comment was a joke--are you sure it wasn't? The true criticism would be to giving the small pro-walker rallies equal coverage to the massive, unprecedented, never-before-seen in Wisconsin rallies against him. That's the news. Although fair enough for you to cover this as a Tosa story, as this is a big event for Tosa (not for the state as the other ones were).
Jim Price

Yes, Donna, I'm comparing only my own coverage of events occurring in Tosa, not statewide coverage. The Recall people had 1,000 people in Tosa in November with some protesters to their event. The Celebrate people hope to have 1,000 people tomorrow with, no doubt, some people protesting their event. I'm doing my best to be fair to both sides. The Patch news sites in the region – there are 15 – have also provided very extensive coverage of both the protests last spring in Madison and the statewide recall effort. And in that, too, I think we have tried to be fair and unbiased.

Shoot, no money, maybe we better end collective bargaining and to make it look like it's about money, let's charge them 5.9% for their pension, even though they already pay for it via deferred comp (anyone that doesnt' get this, see "The Wisconsin Lie Exposed" in Forbes magazine. Read today's Wall Street Journal . Seems that Illinois, with it's tax and spend policy, has been downgraded to the lowest credit rating of any of the 50 states. Wisconsin, on the other hand, who is trying to manage expenses and be fiscally responsible, has been upgraded to one of the highest state ratings. Seems that Illinois will not be able to meet nearly half it's pension obligations, so what did they do? Raised taxes 65 percent, and cut NOTHING. Guess what? They will be broke by 2020.
I am already gearing up for a second term for Scott Walker.

Interesting that you should bring up only the state of Illinois. Yes it's true our neighbors to the south are mentioned but you forgot to include New Jersey and Ohio, both run by republicon governors. You'll find that the majority of their debt is due to underfunded pension plans. You see all governors have the same problem. They just can't seem to keep their hands out of their employees money. That last governor from Wisconsin that tried to do that was Thommy Thompson when he took (stole) money out of the states pension plan and gave it to American Motors. It took a year but finally the Wi. Supreme Court slapped Thommy on his hands and said that's not your money that's the states EMPLOYEE'S money. Keep your hands off of it. So guess what, now governor no degree got one of his stooges in the assembly to propose that PRIVATE INVESTMENT BANKS get to take over the states 80 billion dollar investment for states workers. Since it's inception this has always been done with Wisconsin workers who have felt the results of what they invested in. If this is instituted you can see that 80 billion slowly go down the tubes just like your home values and 401K's. The tax payers will be on the hook for the underfunded pensions but Walker will be long gone. It's called pay to play!!!!

@Mark -- Sometimes those businesses do fail. After a period of good profits because of the decreased bottom line, the consumer catches on to the poor service and takes their business elsewhere. @Mark,You get compensated for everything you put into your job. That is wonderful. And I am here to tell you, that is rare these days. Payroll reduction is becoming an art. For me and other key managers where I worked for 17+ years sacrificed our hearts out, to grow a very small company, large. Together we built a fine reputation in our industry. If our dept. failed in anything, we took it personal. We owned our mistakes. We would go 3 years+ without job evaluations or raises because the owner's were too busy from "GROWING." They would thank us and promise us the moon every year in their traditional speech to the troops, at their Christmas banquet. We were a family, so I thought, until the owner's decided it would be cheaper for them to hire people, from the outside and wedge them between us and them. The "new managers" so to speak. "New blood" they called them. "We don't understand why you're upset?" "Just think of all of the things you're going to learn from these people" they said. We had to teach them our jobs!!! We felt humiliated and we all left the company one by one, just as the owner's had planned. It had to have been planned, because they cut our positions out completely after we left. They didn't promote any of our deserving assistants into our old positions or give them a raise for the extra workload they put upon them when we left. Bitter? There isn't a word that even comes close to how I feel. So be careful people, the 1% is getting craftier.

@Pamela. That sounds pretty rotten. I think from your comments you're a Republican, but I personally hate to see workers disrespected in that way, no matter their beliefs. I think there's an all out war on workers and that is why they are going after the unions. Whether in a union or not, there should be some loyalty and respect for hard workers. Let me guess, were the new people younger (and therefore paid less and likely to cost less to insure)?

@donna c,
Thanks for your support as a human being :) Most of those that were hired from the outside, were young fresh out of college and a few were closer to our ages, who settled for the low wages and benefits. There was no union. As for benefits, there was a pay in group health plan, that offered 3 plans that covered just the employee, ranging from $4.95 per week, to the Cadillac plan for $12.95 per week. If you were a Supervisor or above, the company paid it for you. It didn't cover much, if anything and you paid for services up front and the insurance company reimbursed you their share. I don't belong to any party. I did not vote for Gov. Walker originally. I know what it is like to budget for every nickel and I do feel for those, who have unforeseeable added expenses put upon them during these trying times, no matter who they are. I am for practical and fair solutions. I am not 100% in agreement with everything that Scott Walker does. But, I do agree with enough, not to warrant his recall. As for Unions.... I am still torn on that debate. I have personally found, that you can't have the most ideal employment with them and you can't have the most ideal employment without them. I wish there was one great Union. One that would put an end to all other unions, and we all worked for Mr. Fezziwig and not, for that old Mr. Scrooge :) Ha! Ha! Ha!

@Pamela. I resent the mindset of SOME employers that every time there need to be cuts, look to the workers, take from the workers or get cheaper (younger) workers. They can't keep cutting pay and hitting the work force and expecting people to still have money to spend. There was an article recently called "Squeezed" about how when people are let go, their work is just spread out on the other workers. And, they are oftentimes expected to still get it done in 40 hours. I know this has happened everywhere I've worked starting in the 90s. The productivity of the US worker has skyrocketed, but we don't get more time off for it, just more work.

I'm not denying that pro-Walker forces are probably present at the majority of the lefty events, but even you have to admit that there's a big difference in decorum between the sides when counter-protesting. The right usually has no problem with the left voicing their opinions and views, but when it comes to the right voicing their opinions and views, the left is constantly trying to shout over, drown out, bang drums, and cause as much of a disruption as is necessary to turn the attention to their antics as opposed to the voices of the right.
After all, when was the last time you saw a pro-Walker supporter banging on a drum in counter protest? Be honest here!
There's a clear lack of mutual respect between both sides towards each other, however, the greater culprits in this respect are clearly those on the left.

There's something that I think right wingers should know. Most of us on the left, and I don't speak for all of us, but most of us, are more about issues than personalities. You'll throw out "Jim Doyle" or "Bill Clinton" and think you made some type of point when the debate is about Walker. Jim Doyle and Bill Clinton are not my heroes and don't speak for me. Jim Doyle did some good things for the state, imho. Actually, so did Tommy Thompson. Both also did some bad things. I am not here to say Doyle (or Thompson) were perfect. We're talking about Walker and the agenda ALEC gave him and the laws they write for him and his cohort to force upon this state and its citizens. That's what the protests are about. He's rammed through so much -- it's hard to even list all of it. One example is the law that if you an individual are harmed by a corporation and you win, the corporation only has to pay 4% interest on the money they owe you. This is a change in the previous law where the corporations had to pay 12% just like individuals. Now, the corporations pay 4% but if you harm them, you will pay them 12%. How do you justify that?

No, Mau. Both from personal experience and different studies and articles I've come to understand that right wingers in general (there are always exceptions) are more tied to authority figures and are more loyal to those people even when given proof of negative facts about them. It's borne out with Fox. Fox won the right to lie, they say they are entertainment not news, and fox viewers time and time are shown to be much less informed that a view of mainstream news, but that won't stop them from watching fox because it's about the personalities, not the facts.

I don't watch Fox. We can't afford cable or satellite television. Liberals assume all conservatives listen to Fox, Limbaugh and the other talking heads. I listen to more PBS than I do to conservative talk.
By no means do I believe that the Republicans are better. In fact my analogy has always been "Both parties are heading for the same destination. The democrats are driving through the city and the republicans are taking the by-pass. Same destination, different speeds".

Most already do pay more than their fair share. The real issue is about eliminating preferential treatment so that everyone is paying the same rate according to the same standards. Simplification of the tax code and a reduced competitive effective tax rate and policy would alleviate your concerns, and that's exactly what every single GOP Presidential candidate is pushing for. On the other hand, Obama seems to prefer government handing out preferential treatment by supporting the current tax code.
You're right, it is pretty simple. But then why are you so opposed to the current GOP and TeaParty movements? That's what I don't get.
donna c
3:43 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012
No--most do not pay their fare share. Most make their money on unearned income, so pay 15% to my 30. That's why Warren Buffet said his secretary pays more percentage wise that he does. When it comes to social security, they stop paying at $100,300 (not sure of the exact number), after that, they pay nothing, so that all us that make under that, pay on every penny we make, while people like rush, pay on their first pay check or two and no more. Pre Reagan they paid a much higher rate and the country was much better off. When capitalists have to pay more taxes, they tend to spend money and stimulate the economy in an effort to pay lower taxes. So they invest in America, buy capital equipment, upgrade their factories etc. Reagan's and bush's tax giveaways to the rich along with clinton signing free trade are responsible for the mess we're in. That and Bush's unfunded wars. NOT THE TEACHERS.

@donna c -
You appear to be confusing both individual and corporate taxes, as from your original statement, it appeared that you were talking about corporate taxes, but now you shift the subject and are now talking about individual taxes.
In regards to Warrant Buffet, he makes a majority of this income on capitol gains from investments, and not from labor. Personally, I agree with you that income from cap gains (whether short or long term) should be taxed at the same rate as income from labor, or maybe even 2-3% higher. And once again, this is a policy initiative that most GOP candidates endorse. In fact, Paul wants to completely eliminate federal taxes on income from labor all together. And Obama, well, he wants all tax rates to stay at present levels except for an increase to the marginal tax rates on labor above a certain income level, but remains silent about what he would do with the capital gains tax rate. Which is why everyone has come out and said that his Warren Buffet argument is wholly disingenuous, because the tax rate increases he and the Dems are currently proposing wouldn't effect Warrant Buffet in the slightest.
So, the GOP wants to encourage people to make their own money from both labor and investment, while Obama wants to encourage people to make their own money mostly from investment while discouraging making money from labor by taking more from your earnings realized from labor.
James R Hoffa
4:36 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012
But then why do so-called 'labor unions' support Obama? Good question. Think about it.
Reagan's tax breaks lowered taxes on marginal income earned from labor across the board - not just the rich. Clinton and Bush were the ones who oversaw the lowering of the cap gains tax, first to 20% and then to 15% respectively. And admittedly, Bush also lowered the top tier rates on income from labor, under the 'job creator' theory. But now, the GOP are the only ones talking about lowering and flattening the tax rates on income from labor across the board, to as low as 0% under Ron Paul. So, let's get our facts absolutely straight here, shall we.
Free trade over fair trade was one of the supply side causes of our problems, but consumer sentiment is responsible on the demand side. Personally, I think that the problem must be tackled from the demand side of the equation, as what good is there to an infinite supply if there is no demand for the product? Asian cultures teach and indoctrinate their youth with principles of economic protectionism. Here, I clearly remember my teachers in the class room promoting Japanese built cars as being superior in quality to American union made cars throughout the '80's and '90's - how does this kind of mentality help our cause exactly? You tell me.

I agree that the wars didn't help anything and I didn't support them - that's why I like Ron Paul. On the other hand, Obama promised to pull us out immediately on day 1, which he didn't do, and then went and got us involved in Northern African conflicts and conflicts with Pakistan, so he's not much better with his war record, is he?
The clear solution here, and according to your personal sentiments expressed here the candidate that you should be backing, is Ron Paul, is it not?
After all, let's be real and honest here, shall we?

@Hoffa. There are a lot of good things about Ron Paul but he would do away with social security, right? I don't agree with that. I don't think we should be policing the world and have military bases all over the world--I agree with that. And I think he has integrity, he doesn't change what he says for the most part is true to his beliefs. There will always be an element of society that needs help and I believe they should be helped. I also believe that people who work hard all their lives should get to retire and have at the minimum social security to keep them from abject poverty. That's what I believe. Places with higher taxes have better standards of living, places with low or no taxes like Haiti and Somalia have lower standards of living. I believe in taxes, but I don't believe in war.

It's not completely up to consumers. In many cases, you can't buy some things made in America. Plus wages have not risen in relation to inflation, so to buy something not made by slaves is very expensive and hard for many to afford. If there were import tarrifs on the cheap imports American goods could compete. The right calls that protectionism as if it's bad.

@Hoffa -- don't know that I'm confusing them, just talking about less taxes being paid either via wages (ss) or non wages (unearned income). Then there are the corporate taxes where some like GE pay negative tax. That's ludicrous. But, I think you know more about this than I, so give me your take on this please:

The main reason that GE paid no federal taxes was because of the collapse of the financial sector. GE Capital caused the US operations of GE to finish the year in the red. GE has paid taxes in the past and will pay taxes in the future. What is ludicrous is how so many continue to cite GE as an example of how big businesses don't ever pay taxes...
If we got rid of SS like Ron Paul and some other republicans have suggested, it would improve the tax burden on the middle and lower classes. I'd love to have a system where I could invest the money that I currently contribute to SS into my own 401(k). We keep hearing that SS isn't sustainable, so the sooner we start phasing it out, the better for everyone.

@cowdung:
More than 38,000 foreign corporations had no tax liability in 2005 and 1.2 million U.S. companies paid no income tax, the GAO said. Combined, the companies had $2.5 trillion in sales. About 25 percent of the U.S. corporations not paying corporate taxes were considered large corporations, meaning they had at least $250 million in assets or $50 million in receipts.
The GAO said it analyzed data from the Internal Revenue Service, examining samples of corporate returns for the years 1998 through 2005. For 2005, for example, it reviewed 110,003 tax returns from among more than 1.2 million corporations doing business in the U.S.
Social security is sustainable. All you have to do is raise the limit, let everybody pay for it. It's been done before in a by partisan manner. When I was doing payroll in the past it was somewhere around $60,000--people who made more than that, didn't pay it once they reached $60,000. It's higher now but hasn't kept up with inflation.
On another note--the Canadian oil company that wants to have a pipeline through our country down to the refineries, will do this on our dime, but sell the oil on the world market. I guess you want them to go tax free too?
CowDung
6:39 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012
Sales, assets and receipt figures mean nothing in terms of taxes. Taxes are paid according to profits. When companies lost money and earned no profits, they paid no income taxes (they still pay their payroll taxes).
Everyone does pay for SS--currently, everyone pays SS on the first $106.8k of their earnings.
If it is a Canadian oil company, and does not have any employees or operations in the US, how would the US have any authority to collect taxes from them?
donna c
6:43 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012
Cow Dung--no everyone doesn't pay ss. Some people live off of dividends and pay less taxes and no ss taxes. Others don't pay their share. Of course the US can tax companies that do business here, although when it comes to big oil, we don't. And are you OK with Alaska "owning" it's oil and Alaskan citizens (but not the rest of us) getting paid for that, while on the other hand, the people in Texas get nothing for BP sucking out oil off the coast there and ruining the shoreline and businesses? This is a question--I never understood how people can think it's just fine for corporations to come in and take our oil and sell it on the world market, taking all the profit (unless it's in Alaska). They act like Chavez is crazy for keeping his oil for his own country. I don't care if that's socialist--it's OUR oil (or in his case, their oil).
Jay Sykes
7:59 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012
@donna c... If you don't make 'earned income' you don't pay SS taxes. You only collect SS based on your (or spouse) 'earned income' level;interest and dividend income earnings do not qualify one to participate in SS.
FYI: Obama-care brings us the added tax burden of a 3.8% medicare tax on unearned income, for some individuals.

I suspect that the oil companies aren't drilling without paying some sort of fee to buy/lease the land or buy permits to drill offshore. How are you determining that they are the 'highest profits ever'? By dollar amount, they probably are. By measure of profit margin, they really are not.
Using your link, Exxon made $354,674 million in revenues with a profit of $30,460 million means that they spent $324,214 million in order to make that profit. If I do my math correctly, that comes to a profit margin of around 8.5%. Not exactly the huge margin that I would call 'record profits'. There shouldn't be anything wrong with a company posting a modest profit on the money they invest.
How does the oil belong to the US? If they purchase the mineral rights for the land/area they extract oil from, then the oil belongs to them.

This is Big talking point on the left. So Kathleen policy is to give businesses no incentive to choose Wisconsin . Thats just Ignorant. Just as companies have fleed Illinois and California with tax increases. They will not come here. And that benefits Wisconsin How? .....I am happy to give tax credits for jobs cause it gets people off of government dependancy. There is no better social program than a Job.Unfortunately, the democratic party doesnt stand for jobs. It stands for entitlements. Unfortunately , the public sector is the only way entitlements get paid . When you chase business out of the state you cut your own throat.

Dude: She pointed out that he took office, said we're broke, then gave away money. That's not a policy, that's a true statement. Perhaps he thought giving our money to corporations would stimulate them to create jobs, but that has not happened. Instead of giving money to large companies who often leave anyway, how about developing small and mid-sized businesses. Another way to stimulate the economy other than corporate welfare is public works projects. Are infrastructure needs work, which puts people to work. People are the ones that spend money, when they have it. When people spend money, small and mid-sized businesses make money, providing for those people. It's called demand-side economics and it's the only sustainable way to grow the economy. Giving our tax money away to big companies that are constantly in search of a cheaper work force is not the way. I say, let them get into a good old fashioned riot at the rally. Tell the cops to stand back and just let 'em go at it for say, 15 minutes. Then bring in the fire hoses and soak them all down. On a nice cold January day you will see how fast this crowd will disperse. I miss the good old days.

I kind of like that. people could better use their time doing community service work. The money Walkers supporters are pouring into his campaign could have restored the $800,000 he took from the children of wisconsin (Education). That won't happen though. People who care about people do not grow up to be modern republicans.

What the hell is this rally about anyway? Shouting and sloganeering that one side is trying to prove it is more correct than the other? It strikes me as a lot of people (both sides) with a lot of non-constructive time on their hands that want to taunt each other in a public setting. A waste of 1st amendment rights. Bring on the riot and fire hoses!

What are they ever about? This one is unique only in the fact that it originates amongst those who support Walker. We should have started with riot police and fire hoses about 11 months ago up in Madison.

Well, Big B, a few days ago I called you and your ilk "dinosaurs" who just longed for the uptight, "Leave It To Beaver" days and Stepford Wives' faux-pleasantness of the 1950s/1960s, a world that never really existed. But, ya know, that was before you said something like this, harkening back to the hoses turned, and vicious police dogs unleashed, on civil rights demonstrators by racist cops and city government in Selma, Alabama back then. Now, I can see just how insidious, cynical and ultimately racist, the things, the ideas which inform your smug, snarky arrogance and worldview are. Hardly sunshine, rainbows, shining cities on the hill or a thousand points points of light. You, my misguided wingnut brother, illustrate the dark core of the rightwing heart and mind perfectly.
You have quite starkly and unambiguously revealed a dark and, at bottom, un-American, truth about yourself and your rightwing brethren/Walker-Koch brothers supporters.
That's the thing about Freudian slips, Bob. It's just one of the ways that fundamental truths about ourselves are revealed, and it often happens when you least expect it, and intend it, to.
You're not a "patriot", Bob. You're an extremist.

So we should be happy these are no longer the times of Leave it to Beaver, with one dad and one mom and siblings who did chores and homework?
I guess the days of 2 daddies, or mommy and uncle daddy #1&2, a brother who is a sister, crack houses and meth homes are just a sign of the times?
Whatever happened to decency and morality? Is that the agenda of Democrats to make life 'real' by screwing up traditional values?
No thank you!

I just hope the Libs settle on kathleen Falk I know she will not beat Walker.
The story is going to have a happy ending .
Once upon there was this union hack Kathleen falk . She wanted to go back to failure which the majority of state residents had already rejected. The union bosses had there puppet. They desparately wanted to restore UNION DUES and take away workers rights not to join . But in the end , the Knight in shining armor road into Madison and gave the taxpayers back their rights. His name was not Luke Sky Walker , It was merely Scott walker. The residents show theyre support of the current successes. The UNION SHELL game was exposed. It was ended. Walker would serve as GOVERNOR as long as he desired. The state lived happily ever after.

I admit I voted for Walker. He betrayed me. Said I would not be affected by his "legislation" So I signed the petition because he betrayed the public trust. Same reason I voted for him in the recall election against Tom Ament who also betrayed the public trust. I say let the Walker Gang have their get together and have no protesters at all. Why waste energy on people who won't listen to reason? Those people love to call anti-walker people lefties, dems, thugs, etc. The pro-walker people have consistently shown that they are the bullies. They attack those who don't have the power to fight back. Local public employees are not going to New York city for $2500 a plate fund raisers for Walker's recall, but he is for his campaign. That was sponsored by Friends of Scott Walker. You can Call them, they are based in Texas. Check the phone number. Walker is endorsed by Romny who keeps millions of his money out of the country in the Caymans. Gingrich endorses him too, he is in favor of orphanages for special ed children and kids from single mothers. They can be put to work to learn a trade. Hell has a special place for you.

The Walker people not only attack those who cannot fight back, but also his supports have physically attacked petition circulators.

Corporate elites have looted US corporations by giving themelves unsustainably high salaries and gigantic bonuses. To cover their tracks they shipped Americans jobs to slave wage countries rather than pay decent wages to American employees.

Free speech is dead under Walker. For someone who preaches the glories of the Constitution, he seems to spend most of his time attempting to destroy the rights granted in the Constitution. Oops, I forgot! The Constitution is only for the GOP hacks, not for the rest of America. How very sad.

Yes, it's unbelievable here in Madison. People were literally dragged out of the assembly, while reading from the assembly rules, that they had the right to be there. They put people in jail for watching (and taping) assembly hearings! What do they have to hide?? It's never happened before. We used to have open government. Granted, this was fitzgerald, not walker, but they're all clones of each other in fitzwalkerstan.

@cowdung. No, revenues do not equal expenses, the fuzzy math doesn't work. Those are their profits, meaning profits--that means the profit you make from doing business. Revenues less expenses.
CowDung
1:04 pm on Monday, January 23, 2012
Correct--revenues do not equal expenses. Revenues = Expenses + Profits. I thought I made that clear in my comment. No 'fuzzy math' involved at all.
Revenues: $354,674 million
Profits: $30,460 million
Expenses: $324,214 million
It still works out to a rather modest profit margin of 8.5%.

One last attemp, although I realize it is a waste of time. When the senators left . The people spoke. In EVERY poll. They did not support Walker. They asked for compromise . He refused . BYE, BYE SCOTTIE as it should be. Carl Rove runs the fund for Amerians for prosperity .his self -proclaimed agenda is well known. And just like Fitzgerald his comments on Fox are not taken out of context. Last night at the State of the Union Obama stated that he is responsible for less regulations in his 3 yrs than Bush. In the rep. presponse Daniels said Obama has created 3 times the regulations. I'm curious. Who's lying?
Ray Ray Johnson

It's your paradigm that's flawed, Richard. They are both lying. If they are Repubs, they are lying. If they are Dems, they are lying. My 'rant' that you cite was about this problem existing as a devisive by design, so that YOU and ME don't pay attention to the NWO oligarchs behind the curtain. It's like saying 'who's tougher? Nick Bockwinkle or Bobby 'The Brain' Henan'? It just doesn't matter who is lying, because they BOTH are. IF people like you could see beyond the television and remember your early 20th century American History, you may remember the controversies surrounding the controversial ratification of the 16th Amendment on Feb 25th, 1913, followed by the Federal Reserve Act of Dec 23rd, 1913. This One-Two punch collateralizing our a$$es to the debts our nation was to incur to a private international banking cartel's corporation is now being played out to its 100-year planned end game. Every attempt is made to distract YOU and ME and everyone else for focusing not on where this end game takes us, but on the absurd arguments you seem to have been hooked into with a barbed treble hook. On a note about your post, you really played your hand as totally duped when you actually cited, "Obama stated..." To cite Obama as someone credible is an admission that you believe what you are seeing on TV. Do yourself a favor and at least watch the Zeitgeist movie on the web. Maybe you'll begin to see that everything you thought was real about what we see today is an illusion.

I just noticed these attacks on the editor from my conservative comrades. I am personally asking all my allies to refrain from posting anything about this editor being biased from this point forward. Although Jim is an admitted liberal according to his bio, he is our ONLY shot at objective coverage. He never posted anything untrue or slanted. Coming from me - someone overly critical on media- that's a remarkable statement. With that said, I formally request conservatives to refrain from any comment suggesting otherwise. Thanks and God bless you all.
