President Clinton Rallies Barrett Supporters

With the recall election four days away, the former president spoke at a rally with Democrat Tom Barrett at Pere Marquette Park.

Former President Bill Clinton visited Pere Marquette Park Friday to support Democrat Tom Barrett as Wisconsin's tumultuous recall election nears its end.

Clinton made cooperation the theme of his speech and hammered Gov. Scott Walker for his "divide and conquer" tactics.

"Everywhere I go in America, everywhere I go in the world, the only thing that's working is when you get everybody who's got a stake in the game in there, treat them with respect and people go forward together," Clinton said. "That's how you get out of a ditch."

Clinton said Barrett is the candidate better for education, the budget and creating jobs. He and Barrett also used the event to urge people to vote early, with absentee voting coming to an end Friday.

Hundreds filled the park just after 10 a.m. as Clinton and Barrett rallied the troops. A few Walker supporters were also sprinkled throughout the crowd carrying signs clearly identifying who they stood for.

One man marched through the middle of the crowd with a sign that said, "Support Scott Walker, NOT Union Thugs." A Patch reader who attended the event said the man was shouting so loud, she couldn't even hear Clinton speak. He was later arrested and cited for disorderly conduct. Milwaukee Police confirm this is the only arrest from Friday's rally so far.

Earlier Friday morning, the Republican Party of Wisconsin released a statement noting it was Clinton campaigning with Barrett, and not President Barack Obama.

"Clinton's arrival is clearly meant to provide cover for President Obama's refusal to campaign in Wisconsin, given that today the President will be attending three campaign events a stone's throw away in Minneapolis, and then three more in Chicago," Communications Director Ben Sparks said. "The President has made it clear he does not wish to touch Tom Barrett or this baseless recall election with a ten-foot-pole; he clearly learned a thing or two from the failed campaigns of Creigh Deeds and Martha Coakley."

Clinton briefly addressed some remarks he made in 2003 against the recall of then-California Gov. Gray Davis. He said then that recalling Davis "will create a circumstance where nobody ever makes a hard decision again," words that made the rounds ahead of his appearance in Wisconsin Friday.

"Ordinarily, I'm against recall elections," Clinton said. "But sometimes it is the only way to avoid a disastrous course."

The crowd erupted with cheers and applause after that statement, thrusting their signs into the air, filling the space above the crowd with a sea of political signs.

Barrett, wearing a Brewers jacket, insisted the polls are close and said the election depends on voter turnout.

"(The election) is for you, it's for your children, it's for your grandchildren, it's for our state," Barrett said. "We know Scott Walker has become the rock star of the far right ... my intent is to serve the people of this state, because it's the people of this state that deserve to have a governor on their side."

Following the rally, Clinton signed books and political signs for a few supporters before being whisked away by the Secret Service.

Check back on Patch later today for updates on this story.

@ReCall! -

How did Clinton's signature piece of legislation, NAFTA, work out for you? In fact, didn't that lead to one of the biggest exoduses of union jobs in our nation's history? Yeah, I can see how it's easy to forget about that one!

Wake up man!!!

This is about as smart as John Madden predicting that the team that scores more points will probably win.

How can there be such a division? This state and this country has been divided by Politicians like walker . I can name a 100 reasons why Walker is bad for Wisconsin, but when asked that same question of a walker supporter they cant name one? Do you even know why you support him?

If walker wins we ALL LOSE, WHEN Tom Barrett wins WE ALL WIN, don't you get that?

There is division because of the 'over the top' reaction on the part of the left to Walker's policies. Their 'gloom and doom' propaganda and their refusal to take an honest look at what Walker is doing is the problem...

I'll play, using Anti's shopping list:

1. "Eliminated 3.6 BILLION dollar deficit/Balanced the budget" No. Restructured debt, incurring $153 million in new interest fees we didn't have before. No "surplus."
"Without raising taxes" Low income people's taxes rose because of cuts to EIC and Homestead tax credits.
"And without massive layoffs" Nearly 18,000 public employees have left the state payroll through layoffs, early/forced retirements. To-date.
"Or cuts in services" Services were cut for families with children at Ethan Allen and the nearby girls' unit when this facility closed. Tax credits for low income people were cut; access to BadgerCare/Seniorcare was cut; etc.
"(at least for those governments that chose to use them)" These programs are in place for good reason.
"Lowered property taxes for first time in years" This is not true for everyone, and lowering some people's property taxes for a few dollars at the expense of other people's wellbeing and security is cruel and shortsighted.
"Returned power to local governments" They already had power appropriate to their district. Now that have lost power in the area of tax increases needed because of budget cuts, i.e. K-12 education.
"Voter ID, Concealed carry, Castle doctrine" 15 incidences of fraud in 2010, none preventable by Voter ID. Some people feel more powerful with a gun. Nationally, deaths have increased in states with Concealed carry/Stand your Ground. Nice.

I see no victory in any of this.

That clearly outweighs your single 'division' reason.

Oh Bren, you are back to that silly game of spin the facts.
Restructuring debt is only part of equation. We have alot more debt than even Governor Walker could have figured out how to pay for. The structural debt is simply how are we going to pay for our obligations, including debt payments, for the next two years. Restructuring debt is like refinancing your home at a lower rate.
There were no massive layoffs except in school districts like Milwaukee where they purposely extended their contracts before Act 10 kicked in (for four years in MPSs case)
Across the state, property taxes went down for the first time in 12 years. There is always some fluctuation since taxes are based on property values. Also, the tools were given to local governments, but it is up to the local entities to use them. The state as a whole is the significant fact in this case.
Local governments were enslaved to workers contracts. Businesses have options that governments don't when their employees ask too much. They can pack up and move. This helps them keep the threat of outrageous demands in check.
You and others have been spouting out that there has been no fraud in elections. Now there were "15 incidences of fraud in 2010"? Even one is unacceptable. Voter ID may not stop fraud, but it will lessen it by making it harder. And who doesn't have an ID these days?

No Bren, your candidate is wrong for Wisconsin.

Thank you GOD for Scott Walker!

Walker release the emails in the John Doe investigation that will really get the state reeling. There is probably enough in those emails to end his political career , his marriage , and put him away in prison for a long time. The crime boss is going down hard along with all of his cronies. Everyday the rope is getting a little tighter around his neck and he's really beginning to feel the pressure building. Just a matter of time Walker and your toast. I don't know if Clinton had to have his arm twisted. I think he's always happy to have a podium and and an audience in front of him. Time of day wasn't the greatest. Thankfully there were enough public employees (overworked, underpaid, unappreciated scapegoats that they are) who had no problem blowing off part of their workday to show up so he wasn't preaching to just the 6-8 regular occupants of the park and the media contingent.

As Clinton said, a broken clock is right twice a day. No one has it all figured out. The solutions to complex problems and to engage the electorate is to incorporate the ideas from multiple points of view. Creative collaboration. Not divide and conquer. Solutions to our challenges are in the middle. Funding education. Right-sizing the size and spend of government. Incorporating consistency in civil rights and access. Respecting the impact of tax on the average guy. Stimulating innovation. Those seem to be the challenges in front of us.

It's not about the unions - though it is. It's not about balancing the budget - though it is. Those are topics for a long-view, yet the voices that most loudly support the governor focus the dialog on single line-items, short sighted.

Wisconsin cannot better itself without a plan. Reactive responses don't do it. Dialog explodes. While one may yield power, he doesn't yield influence. A significant proportion of the constituency is left out of the conversation, misunderstood, underrepresented, frustrated because it's their state too.

@bob - walker has a plan. We all know that. It doesn't reflect the values of a lot of people. I understand ours to be a representative government, yet the only way I'm represented, these days, is with an entire turnover of power. That's just seems ridiculous. And the only way that changes is if you and I insist for it.

What's important to you and those that share your opinion is valid and worthy of thoughtful consideration. Same with me and mine. Quite frankly, between us are reasonable inclusive ideas, I'm sure.

I expect, and you should, ask for what Barrett has done. His active participation and support of the M7 is what I'm talking about. They're scope is diverse and inclusive, and they've had success. That said, I'm sure you'll find faults. Change comes in small bits. That's okay. I don't expect to change your mind. I just want to feel understood...a little.

I don't expect Barrett to have a plan at-the-ready. He has a job already. That said, I trust that he will listen to you, too. I will hold him to that. You deserve that. So do I.

The longer that we dismiss each other as crazies and categorize each other as something other than us - liberals, tea partiers, union thugs, conservatives, corporate terrorists, progressives, name the label - the deeper we'll get. We all want the same thing - just see different ways to get there.

So you are going to be voting for Barrett, even though he doesn't have a plan, which you readily admit. And, even though, in your words, Wisconsin can't better itself w/o a plan.

What part of what you've posted here would you like me to take at face value and what part would you like for me to assume that, even if it doesn't make sense or if it seems consistent, has some foundation in something you've rationalized as a substitute for substance? Just so we're not going back and forth all day here....

I want Barrett to develop a strategic plan in an inclusive, transparent way. To do what we need, takes thoughtful engagement. And that takes time. That is what I expect from him. It's also what I expected of Walker - though his method is a little one-sided. Simply - that's my issue.

Comment_arrow

Bob McBride

12:35 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2012

So, assuming Barrett is successful and wins, and subsequently develops a "plan" and that plan doesn't meet with the expectations of folks who don't necessarily think like you do, and they launch a similar recall within the allotted time limits for doing so, you're good with that? Are you good with that going forward every time those in the party out of power aren't happy with the "plan" of the party in power?

moroch_mke

1:07 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2012

Not feeling heard.
Want more than 1 thing. Base those wants on values, and be accepting of possibility. Welcome the reality that sometimes you have to have a bad day to have a good week. (invest today/yield tomorrow) If you can do those things, I expect Barrett to include something you want. I sincerely do. And if he doesn't, that's not how representative government works. Sure, recall him. But remember compromise means no one gets everything they want. I'm okay with that. Are you?

Anyway, I'm too abstract - exchange of ideas - for this thread. I sense you want answers and absolutes. I can't go there - not in a venue like this.

Whatever happens Tuesday, I hope whoever is Governor realizes he has a responsibility to those who did - and didn't vote for him....

Given the presence of rock star former Pres. Bill Clinton, an interesting question is "Where is the current occupant of the White House?" Pres. Obama was traveling in Minnesota last week but somehow failed to show up to even shake hands with the Democratic candidate in this watershed election. Too hot to handle? Don't throw good money after bad? Had to go to a conflicting fundraiser for his own campaign? Had a previous commitment for a game of golf or hoops? Hmmmm.
