Paul Ryan Slams Barack Obama in First TV Interview Since Election

On "Meet the Press," Wisconsin congressman and former Republican vice presidential candidate says Hillary Clinton would have done better job with economy than Obama has.

In his first live television interview since the November election, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan Sunday blasted President Barack Obama for his handling of the economy and said the nation would be in better financial shape if Hillary Clinton were president.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press," the former Republican vice presidential candidate said "we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now" if Clinton had been president, The Huffington Post reported.

Clinton, who is secretary of state, ran unsuccessfully against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary. Clinton is considered the strongest potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, however, she has not indicated whether she would make another run for the nation's highest office.

In Sunday's interview, Ryan took a number of jabs at Obama, the Huffington Post said, at one point saying: "I don't think that the president thinks we actually have a fiscal crisis." Ryan even pulled out a chart to show host David Gregory the dangers of runaway government spending.

Ryan also predicted that the so-called "sequester" cuts, which Congress postponed for two months following the fiscal cliff deal at the beginning of this year, will likely take place, CNN.com reported. Those cuts would slash critical items from the budget of both defense and some non-defense aspects of the government to help save money.

Ryan said he doesn't think the country is facing a government shutdown this spring, but he said the sequester cuts will happen, CNN.com said.

"We can't lose those spending cuts. That was to pay for the last debt ceiling increase, let alone any future increases," Ryan told Gregory.

The congressman from Janesville also reflected on the presidential election, the Huffington Post reported.

"It was a great experience, I feel that I benefited tremendously from that," Ryan said. "Mitt Romney would have been one heck of a great president. He's a very good man. And the big regret I have is that we didn't win the election and that we weren't able to put the kinds of reforms that we think are right for the country in place."

Ryan's name often comes up as a possible presidential candidate in 2016, but when asked what he thought about running then, he said: "I don't."

“I think it’s just premature,” Mediaiate.com quoted Ryan as saying. “I’ve got a job to do. I represent Wisconsin, I’m chairman of the budget committee at the time we have a fiscal crisis.”

Until this weekend, Ryan had kept a relatively low profile after the November presidential election. On Saturday, Ryan spoke at a gathering of conservatives in Washington, D.C., where he said the Republican Party must avoid internal bickering in the wake of the losses in November, The Huffington Post reported.

Ryan's first public appearance in Wisconsin since the election came about two weeks ago, when he spoke at a Tea Party rally in Racine and blasted the federal Affordable Care Act.

Obama doesn't want to spend $ on national defence, he needs that $ for people who won't work. Like his base voters.
He talks a great game in front of cameras but watch his actions. He'll male sure the sequester cuts happen, heck, he's looking forward to it. Wealth redistribution-remember?
Meanwhile terrorism runs wild but at least Bin Ladens dead. When the mid east blows up will we be ready? No, but at least everybody will have a Obamaphone.

For God's sake, we spend more on defense than at least the next 15 countries combined, with a military built for the cold war. This is not defending the country, but the fat bank accounts of the defense contractors.

As usual, the Canadians call us out -- http://tinyurl.com/ak59o8v. This is an excellent case history about what's wrong on how we spend on the military.

No Keith, sending 30 F-16's to Eygpt along with 200 Abram tanks like Obama is doing is keeping the defense contractors in fat bank accounts. Another brllian Obama move. Let's just give the good stuff to the Muslim Brotherhood. Kind of like another Fast and Furious. Arm our enemies, while weakening our own defense. Brilliant strategy. Somehow you assume all Muslims are radical. Hope the doctor that performs your vasectomy is a Muslim.

Brian's little rant of course about the Muslim Brotherhood is a smokescreen to divert away from the issue about out of control military spending.

Obama wants to do two things: damage the Republican party so there will never be a Republican President again and accelerate the date when Whites will become a minority in their own country. With the help of the media and Progressives in general Obama is well on his way of completing those goals. My solution: make illegal aliens, Progressives and other anti-American human debris unhappy with life in the United States. Do not do business with any commercial entity that hires illegal aliens or supports Progressives causes.

While it is true in any 2-party system, the opposition would like to limit their opponent to one term. I know of no other president or opposition party hierarchy who met on Inaugural Day, and vowed with such vehemence to not only make this president a ONE term president, but to stop every single piece of legislation that he proposed dead in its tracks, not to allow him to have any legislative victories, no matter how it affected the nation or its economy.

This is nothing more or less than a total “scorched earth policy” in action. The GOP acted like little children, saying, in effect, if we cannot have it, then we will destroy it so no one can have it.

The sadder part is that nothing has changed, except the rhetoric of the GOP; they will now verbalize the potential of “compromise” and being an “inclusive party” that will accept tanned people, and their “war on women” and “reproductive rights” on “Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security” will be toned down in speeches; however, the same hatred, bigotry and intolerance, and goal to destroy all the above is still there, and, of course, the Todd Akins’ will be discouraged from speaking in public.

Could someone point me in the direction of an instance of the opposing party going this far, with such extreme tactics and vehemence in all of our history to achieve that ONE term goal?

Actually she is the one person in our family who works part time and confuses compassion with handouts. Ryan's work on the budget committee alone is enough to warrant the utmost respect. If he does nothing else in his entire career at least he tried to open people's eyes to the fact that we are on a path that is unsustainable. Unfortunately we have people like you in this country who think that deficits don't matter and everything should be paid for by someone else. My hope is that this is a temporary swing in the pendulum and we can change our children to become more like our forefathers who worked for what they got and didn't expect a handout.

Why would you fight against someone like Ryan who's budget plan didn't cut any spending but only cut future increases? You voted for Obama who has less experience in the private sector then I did when I was in my 20's. The only accomplishment that Obama will have when he is gone that he was the first black president (which I do believe is a good thing for our country) other than that his presidency will be considered a complete failure by all economic standards. I am still waiting for all those FACTS about Ryan’s accomplishments that I asked you for… crickets…

Republicans hate government, that is why they are horrible at governance!

I voted for President Obama, both times, because he is the right man for the job. The spending of 6 Trillion had to occur to keep the economy going, pay for the wars Bush kept off the books, the 50 Billion in Medicare pharmaceuticals [GIFTS] that Bush gave to Big Pharma – charge as much as you want, the government will NOT force you to negotiate on price – the Wall Street, Banks and Housing issues. You cannot just refuse to pay all the governments bills, destroy the world economy because you believe in austerity.

Furthermore, Ryan voted for the Bailout Bill and 94% of the Bush administrations extravagant spending; so you had better find some FACTS before you come at me with President Obama’s spending. We need a balanced approach, targeted spending and targeted cuts.

Ryan wants to cut Medicare to the bone, destroy Medicaid, and drive Social Security either into bankruptcy or have Wall Street take it over as a privatization. Subsequently, he wants to massively increase military expenditures, at the cost of those 3-programs. I am deeply opposed to all four of those proposals as they, more than anything that President Obama could possibly every do would bankrupt America, destroy what is left of the middle class and bring the world economy down along with it.

ALL economic indicators are up and in the positive direction, ALL; 35 months of consecutive positive employment creation. More jobs have already been created up to this point than in the entire 8-years of the Bush administration.

@John Wilson, clueless could be used to define your grasp of reality. I have already stated that Bush spent way to much. You on the other hand can't admit that Obama's spending has been ridiculous and out of control to the 9th degree.Bush took over during a recession and went to two wars (that were approved by democrats also) so that accounts for a lot of his spending. The housing bust was mostly created by the great democrats in 98 who thought that every person in the US should have a house and then the banks proliferated upon that. You also complain about a $50 billion drug plan for Medicare and applaud Obamacare which could lead to our fiscal demise; here is a little tid bit from the GAO only six days ago.

The Government Accountability Office, 2013:

The Government Accountability Office (GAO)’s annual audit of the government, released Thursday, raises serious concerns about the federal government’s long-term financial stability and the effectiveness of the Affordable Care Act’s cost-curbing measures.

The report found “that—absent policy changes—the federal government continues to face an unsustainable fiscal path.”

There are those, Ryan included, who actually consider Ryan the “future of the GOP”. That simply means that the GOP is as dead as bin Laden. This is Ryan’s 15th year as a Congressman from the 1st district. He was “time barred” by the GOP’s own rules from serving any longer as Chairman of the Budget Committee after December 31, 2012; however, owing to his stunning success in winning the election as our new Vice President, the GOP waived their own rule and once again gave him the Chairmanship.

What has Ryan done for Wisconsin, as a Congressman? Well, he has collected $174,000 a year in salary, while actually working less than half a year, every year since he was elected to Congress. He authored and passed a total of 2-bills, 1) a 39-cent excise tax on each arrow sold, 2) he named a post office in Janesville. Additionally, he oversaw the destruction of AMC, Delphi and Chrysler, as they all went bankrupt or left the state. Sorry, I forgot, he also wrote a book on “Prosperity for America” now in its 3rd iteration. In his 15th year as our Congressman, he has thus far collected $2,436,000 in wages alone, and has produced absolutely nothing of any value for the citizens of Wisconsin.

Finally, it was his vote and his opposition to the Debt Ceiling raise that caused the AAA rating of the USA’s credit to be downgraded... the first time in the history of the Republic.

This man’s hubris is astonishing as he attempts to criticize President Obama, on anything.

You should be barred from posting on this forum. You bring nothing of substance and take up valuable data storage for nothing more important than one off comments with absolutely no basis in reality. A congressman does little to nothing to establish business & govt relationships within his own state. Implying that he is at fault for the destruction of Chrylser is comical and would be scoffed at by any economist. Your anger over the fact that your life has gone poorly and you blame everyone else shows through on every post and unfortunately also shows that you do no research on any topic you post about.

Not to mention his "Path for Prosperity" "budget" if you've read it, does not provide a road map, much less crunch "real" numbers.

His role model/heroine, a fiction writer, was likewise fuzzy on practica in promoting her philosophy of Existentialism, er, Objectivism. Ayn Rand, however, can be only blamed with borderline plagiarism and toying with people's patience. Paul Ryan would experiment with people's lives. When we are having real-life impact on others I believe our expectations must be set a bit higher.

Chadwick, please re-read your own post, particularly the parts about substance and reality. Use of the term "oversaw" is interpreted as happening on his watch. Which is true. Parker Pen's long death spiral also ended on Ryan's watch. What can a poor Congressman do to help? In an indirect way, quite a lot, actually. It requires picking up the phone and calling people, and most of all, caring.

Really, and your opinion is supported by what delusion or WISHFUL THINKING?

Ryan is all over his district and others, when he is not in DC body building, holding many meetings, spewing his propaganda – he calls them “Listen Sessions – as he passes out illegal bribes in the form of Sub-Sandwiches, too small a campaign law violation to be prosecuted by Republican DA’s, but against the law nonetheless.

Your woefully inadequate attempt to rescue Ryan from his own lack of any legislative achievements or any accomplishments at all for the state of Wisconsin is entirely devoid of both reason and FACT.

Ryan is a man of outstanding hubris and archaic ideology, only that and nothing more…

The Anti–Alinsky –

Happy Birthday, Dear Paulie! Today is your 43rd birthday; it is always comforting to see someone’s age catch up with their IQ! We will be going catfish noodling this morning, Bible thumpin’ this afternoon, P90X power training in the early evening, after that, we will sit around and read of those 200-year old Austrian economists – thoroughly debunked centuries ago – but Paulie is so in tune with them and thinks they are so relevant and insightful for the 21st century.

AMC > Renault > Chrysler… “While a Congressman can help save a business, it takes a lot more than his effort.” Yes, however, it does take SOME effort. “The Jeep/Eagle Division of Chrysler was formed from the remains of AMC after Chrysler’s 1987 buyout. We certainly would not want to lay the blame for a business leaving the state on Ryan… it was probably Walker’s fault… not enough freedom from property taxes, business subsidies and that good ol’ “minimum wage labor.”

I think Bren elucidated the use of the word “oversaw” for your cohort Chadwick earlier in this blog; perhaps you too might be capable of at least a little learning…

September 13, 2007.

"Delphi had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005. In August, the company settled lawsuits by investors who accused the company's former managers of fraud.”

Ryan helped them...

Just another sterling example of how “businesses” works in Wisconsin.

So now you've jumped ship to the anti-Walker side? and probably doesn't cut it, how about some facts for a change instead maligning people that don't agree with you?

John also wrote: "I think Bren elucidated the use of the word “oversaw” for your cohort Chadwick earlier in this blog; perhaps you too might be capable of at least a little learning…"
Bren attempted to refine "oversaw" to suit her argument. To oversee is to have an active SUPERVISORY role in the actual event. Sow how did Paul Ryan SUPERVISE the destruction of AMC, Delphi, and Chrysler in this state?

Bren also attempted to tie Paul Ryan to Parker Pen, with: "Parker Pen's long death spiral also ended on Ryan's watch. "
Long death spiral kind of indicates the company had been in trouble long before Mr. Ryan came on the scene.

John also wrote: ""Delphi had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005. In August, the company settled lawsuits by investors who accused the company's former managers of fraud.”

Ryan and Obama are ideological opposites, throw in emotions of the recent campaign, plus recall Ryan being invited to attend a presidential budget presentation a couple years back, given a seat in the front row under false pretenses of a forthcoming compromise and then being used as a prop to slam Republicans. They respect each other, disagree on many things ideoloically, and have come to dislike each other. The president is known for a competitive streak and quickness to dismiss other's ideas. Ryan strikes me as guy who acts on his ideals but is willing to be pragmatic and negotiate. But when it comes to President Obama, the presz has gotten under Paul's skin and it shows. The president wants to take out Ryan since he is an effective champion the opposition's ideas.

I can't bring myself to hold Rep. Ryan or any other politician responsible for the failure and or exiting of businesses from Wisconsin. Nor can I give credit to politicians for business creation. The decline of businesses in Wisconsin was due to many complicated forces, not the least of which was the transition from a local domestic economy to the global economy. Also the transition from heavy industrial manufacturing to light manufacturing and service.

My issue with Paul Ryan is that he sits in a conservative reactionary ideological bubble. In times past, his extreme positions wouldn't account for anything and he wouldn't even be a footnote to history. If Ryan were able to be move more to the middle, then he might have a shot at higher office.

Lyle, I think Ryan is more pragmatic than you give him credit for. I believe when he put out the Medicare vouchers plan it was a negotiating poisition. Ryan calculated the other side would come back with a counter proposal. But in campaign season democrats decided it was better to critique Ryan than engage in Medicare reform discussions. Ryan modified his approach somewhat with a democratic co-sponsor to give seniors the options to stick with old Medicare or take the voucher option. I'm not defending Ryan's policy, but I give him credit for taking risk. The democrats at the national level made marginal gains, so, it appears their tactic to avoid offering a solutuion to the problem paid off. Of course that leaves my generation approaching Medicare age and wondering what will happen as the program nears bankruptcy. Ryan, I think, is also dealing pragmatically with the dynamics that exist within his party.

Eric –

No Democrat ever cosponsored a Medicare Bill with Ryan; the Democratic Congressman in question here even publically refuted that. He met with Ryan and they discussed possible scenarios… Ryan – aka also known as Lyin’ Ryan for good reason – characterized these discussions as “cosponsored” a bill with…Ron Wyden (D) Wyoming.

To characterize Ryan as bipartisan is sort of like discussing a virgin harlot. Pragmatic to Ryan means that it matches the numbers he pulled from his derriere when creating a budget.

No one really wants to address these issues in a serious manner, not the D’s or R’s, as that in all probability will mean CUTS, rather than going after the drivers of these expenditures… the “job creators” that rape you daily…

“Gov. Romney is talking nonsense. Bipartisanship requires that you not make up the facts. I did not ‘co-lead a piece of legislation.’ I wrote a policy paper on options for Medicare. Several months after the paper came out I spoke and voted against the Medicare provisions in the Ryan budget. Governor Romney needs to learn you don’t protect seniors by makings things up, and his comments today sure won’t help promote real bipartisanship.”

Is the Conservative Fever Starting to Break?

—By Kevin Drum
| Wed Jan. 30, 2013 12:13 PM PST

Andrew Sullivan thinks there's been a tectonic shift since Barack Obama's reelection:

It's not just the return to Clinton tax rates for the very wealthy; it's a real cultural shift as well. In the last week, we have seen the Boy Scouts back off a national policy of excluding openly gay scouts and scout-masters (which means the Mormon hierarchy must have not made too big a fuss); we have Tom Tancredo almost smoking a joint in public (don't make a bet with him on anything in the future); we have Sean Hannity's ratings plummeting; we see gay couples included in the president's comprehensive immigration reform; we have Limbaugh edging ever-so-slightly toward Rubio on immigration.

That chart does surprise me. Not because Obama's favorables are up five points. That seems like fairly standard inaugural honeymoon stuff. But his unfavorables are down ten points. Some of that is honeymoon stuff too, and it will wash out soon enough. Still, it's a big drop, and it suggests that maybe a bit of the fever has broken on the right. Maybe.....

I suspect you are being just a bit overly optimistic; I really do not think that the general population of the TP/GOP is ready for anything other than a fleeting, a very tenuous, relationship with sanity.

The NEW congress will give when they absolutely have to – it is all about their jobs, not WE THE PEOPLE; the TP/GOP has already emailed everyone their NEW “Talking Points” and that is their tactic to WIN THE TANNED VOTE AND THE WOMAN’S VOTE.

Real change is real tough work and it requires insight into the human condition and your own personality and shortcomings; psychotic ideation is not eliminated by feckless “talking points”.

Everything they do is for the acquisition of political and economic power. Cleaning up the racist, race baiting, hateful language, stereotypes and fear mongering against tanned people, contraception, abortion, equal pay and equal rights for women, while silencing the many Todd Akins’ in the party, are just a massive subterfuge with the goal being getting VOTES. They are not even close to that, “come to Jesus moment”.

When Wayne La Pierre stands up and supports a ban on semi-automatic weapons, universal background checks, a 10-magazine maximum, as does 86% of the NRA membership, and sends his lobbyists out to support that, I will seriously begin to reassess my current opinion of the TP/GOP.

*_Ineptocracy_****(in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) – a system of government where the least

capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the

members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded

with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number

of producers*

"Tanned vote" meaning those exposed to the Florida sun?
Jesus Wilson, that is sad.

Chadwick –

Being part of the TP/GOP cabal that frequently posts on the Patch it is clear that you KNOW THINGS.

“…but I would “guess” that 86% disagree with you on the ban on semi automatic weapons and high capacity magazines.”

That sounds suspiciously like a “guess” to me.

I know it will take some time for you to progress through the anger stage of grief, some folks never do…You may disparage the American electorate all you want because their thinking is not as warped and convoluted as yours and they do not feel as you, because in America we do have “free speech”. That does not change the fact, however, that you lost the election and subsequently, you are a loser. In fact, you TP/GOP clowns lost the popular vote in 5 out of 6 last presidential elections; you lost the last 5 out of 6 Presidential Electoral College elections too – I am discounting the Supreme Court’s decision to give that superb intellectual, GWB the 2000 election… there is a message in this for those wise enough to comprehend and analyze…

Incidentally, there is no money to be made for anyone from NOT selling guns and ammunition; however, there are billions to be made by enticing fearful clowns into buying them as a symbol of their manhood.

I suspect that, as a TP/GOP sycophant you might begin to gain some insight into being a loser, because, after all, you KNOW THINGS…

Who listens to a loser like Paul Ryan?
It's all just sour grapes, just because President Obama won Wisconsin.

Wilson, my symbol of manhood will stop a home invasion faster than your symbol of manhood.

These comments that support failed positions (meaning failed by the electorate decision) are disappointing. The people have spoken about what direction they feel the country should proceed. Those in dissent have the right to feel as such but should also accept the decision. The gun debate has escalated due to circumstances that have occurred since the election. Public sentiment about what must be done regarding this dilemma is very clear. Instead of fighting partisan positions, all of us should come together in an attempt to arrive at a positive solution to the gun violence problems that exist as well as all of the other problems that threaten our country fiscally and socially.
