No Suspects in Slaying of Gas Station Clerk

Police say 56-year-old gas station clerk, a father of four, died from injuries that occurred at the Petro Mart gas station on the corner of East Broadway and Pleasant Street.

Updated at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday with information about reward and more details from police.

Authorities have identified the 56-year-old gas station clerk who was killed early Tuesday morning as Nayyer M. Rana, who died from apparent gunshot wounds.

Police are investigating robbery as a possible motive, according to Capt. Ron Oremus. However, it is not yet determined if and how much money was stolen.

Rana was killed early Tuesday morning at the Broadway Petro Mart gas station East Broadway and Pleasant Street. Rana’s friends and family are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in his death.

“Mr. Rana is survived by his wife and four children,” said Attorney Mike Maxwell. “The family asks for privacy as they deal with the grief of the loss of a beloved husband and father."

A memorial fund has been set up to help the Rana family with expenses at Landmark Credit Union.

It is unknown at this time if the homicide was related to a robbery, according to Oremus.

"Police and fire responded to the scene and found that the clerk was deceased,"  Oremus said in a news release.  "He has wounds on his body, but we are unable to confirm at this point whether they are gunshot wounds."

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the department at 262-524-3831.

Preliminary Waukesha police reports indicate the man, who has not been identified, was shot multiple times and found at the gas station at about 4:20 a.m. Patch attempted to contact the gas station owner, who was unavailable to comment because he is still meeting with police.

As of 7:55 a.m. police were still searching for suspects in the homicide and there were minimal details on the incident.

A representative of the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office arrived on the scene at about 7:30 a.m.

After the incident, Waukesha police checked other area gas stations as a precaution but nothing suspicious was reported.

From the Waukesha Police Department:

This store was also robbed on May 14 at 12:58 am (Rana was not working at the time).  The description of the suspect for that crime was a male black suspect who was 25 years of age, 6-feet tall, 140 pounds, where he displayed a black handgun.  No suspect has yet been arrested for the May 14 robbery. There is no known connection between the two robberies.   He was wearing a black ski mask, black jersey or hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans.

Jimmy’s Grotto restaurant at 314 E Main St . (two or three blocks away) was also robbed on May 10 at 11:48 pm.  The suspect in that robbery was described as an unknown White or Hispanic male, approximately 20-25 years old, 5-feet 7-inches tall, 170 pounds, brown eyes, wearing a gray hoodie sweatshirt, jeans, a black baseball hat with a red emblem, a white and black bandana covering his face, and black gloves with white skeletons on them.  No suspect has yet been arrested for the May 10 robbery.  There is no known connection with this robbery and the robberies at the Petro Mart.

This is the city's first homicide in 2012. There were no homicides in 2011, there was one homicide in 2010 and two in 2009.

Stay with Waukesha Patch for more details on the shooting.

Try the Jackson Court. Many thugs live in that area. Or the Grand Avenue area past Sunset. They seem to hang there there. It's the 27th and North syndrome.

My husband and I were eating outside at Peoples Park yesterday afternoon and we saw 3 black guys walking slowly down Main just looking around. All the stores were closed, and it was a ghost town down there. Unless you were at Peoples, there wasn't anything to do. It was like they were casing the stores while no one was around. Scary.

Dear Herb... maybe these 3 black guys were looking for a place to eat that they could afford. People's park is a tad expensive for the average joe. Maybe they just got out of work and were walking home, maybe they were bored and decided to walk to a friends house. Sheesh - sure your name isn't George Zimmermann and the 3 men were Trevon Martins of the world. Maybe it was a white guy who is a meth head looking for his next fix.. Let the police do their job and hopefully nab the person(s) who did this horrific crime in my neighborhood!

Saw a few suspicious characters downtown yesterday as well, and I can tell anyone who isn't brain-dead that they were NOT coming back from a job, were NOT looking for "somewhere affordable to eat" and were NOT out with any real agenda when they'd be looking in every building and circling the block multiple times in the downtown. "Waukesha Girl" can remain in her false bubble and keep her wishful thinking about giving everyone the benefit of the doubt (though, I'm sure her mindset also only applies to some and not all based on her notions of "social justice", as her post reeks of uber-liberal self-hatred of the highest order), I prefer to be skeptical about the new "occupants" of the city who seem to have come here for opportunities that are of the illegal sort and who have little desire to be part of anything other than what can net them a few dollars at someone else's expense.

Pretend that the problems of the big city aren't here, and eventually you'll be one more victim. Stay alert, call in things that seem wrong when there's obviously trouble brewing, and we'll be better off than those who believe that they need to feel pity on those who they consider "victims of the system" who are most often the perpetrators of violent crime. The only people who deny facts are idiots, and of course, there's always a few who want to try and convince themselves that people are all inherently good when many are not.

Sometimes we have to man up and be honest about who are committing the most crimes in our city and when it had starting happening in more frequently.
Facts are facts. They move from Milwaukee to get free rent and food stamps and then steal and kill for fun.
Would you walk around Grand Ave near the Jackson Court area at dark? I wouldn't. My husband said he wouldn't even do it.
It is sad that these people can't do anything but get girls pregnant and then not support them.

There are like 10 kids per unit, cheap apartments, which makes it look ghetto on that rode, but if anyone really went down that road, they would see that its a bunch of 10 and younger children! Hey guys,

Let's try to keep the hate/anti-Milwaukee speech down. None of you know what race the suspect is, none of you know where the suspect is from and you don't know the circumstances of Tuesday's tragic homicide. If you have inside information, then you should be contacting the police.

At Patch, our sympathies go out to the family members. If anyone from the family wants to share who Nayyer was, I can be reached at 262-664-1665.

Very Well said Sarah Millard, this is not a time to point fingers at a race because something so terrible has happened. It makes no sense that someone has lost a life, and so many of you want to blame a race, a race has no control over a person commiting a crime.

Yes, people commit crimes, not races....but there seem to be a lot of criminals of a certain race in this town and a lot of drug dealing, also being done mostly by a certain race. They also seem to be coming from a certain other city, so can anyone honestly say that they have a totally open mind about who is involved in these crimes? You can't blame people for being logical. We had to put in a security system in our home recently because we don't trust this area much anymore. Unfortunately, when we moved to Waukesha we thought it was a nice town, only to find that it wasn't what we thought it was, after it was too late. All efforts to make improvements in our neighborhood have been useless; it's like the city is against the good people, and only working for the druggies, sex offenders, absentee landlords and slumlords, criminals and the crazies.

My prayers for the family and friends. First of all the police in waukesha are not the problem if you call them and they can arrest somebody they will do it as fast as possible with more manpower than the secret service but if you just need help or service they are not gonna care they are all about crime numbers on paper and are usally pretty rude. Second of all dont be so quick to point fingers at race thats not good, but we also cant change the fact that most crimes in this state are commited by so call minoritys. the thug ganster lifestyle are bred into them at a young age and that is the problem. those who are raised and see beyond the peer presure end up being the best best people you'll ever meet. gandi once said be the change you want to see!!! time to activate people. dont judge a book by its cover but also dont think your racist by realizing that there are people up to no good. The biggest thing in a neborhood you can do is get involved you'll find good and bad is not always black and white that guy you think is a thug could be a hard worker and the guy you think is respectable could be a crack dealer. hopefully the comunity will find the guy who did this and bring him to justice but even that is not gonna bring back a father and friend next time we need to make sure sure we don't allow these people in to our society in the first place

A terrible, terrible tragedy! My sincere condolences to the family, as well as our community for the loss and fear that results from the fact that at least a couple armed robbers and one murderer walk the streets of our city.

If I were a Waukesha store owner/clerk at the present time, I would be forced to exercise my right to bear arms to the fullest extent of the law. And when one of these individuals came into my business to victimize me, with the least restraint possible I would have to protect myself, my property, and my community with a couple properly placed rounds. Maybe this would help thwart future robberies, or maybe it wouldn't? As the old saying goes, "you don't take a knife to a gun fight". Well, it appears that Waukesha has become the Wild-Wild West and business owners are sitting ducks.
I am not a proponent to violence, but there comes a time when action needs to be taken. With all due respect, the police are having NO luck at stopping the individual(s) who are committing these robberies, and now someone has lost their life.
As for all the racial profiling in the comments above, you should be ashamed of yourself! Just wait till the suspect gets caught and he/she turns out to be Caucasian... Then what will you think?
Why don't we come together as a community and STOP these criminals from victimizing us all, because the truth is we are all victims to these crimes as members of this community.

Why so sure he's caucasian, Scott? Will it "make things different" if he is? Or, when the probabilities based on crime statistics and the fact that the same station was held up twice by black men in the past few months comes to almost guarantee what color the person who robbed was, will it make you sad?

People, it IS NOT "racism" to simply point out the validity of observing true statistics and using them to point out the common factors in much of today's crime coming from a specific demographic. Nobody is saying "all black people are bad", but some of us are pointing out that MANY are bad, many do not value their own lives or that of those around them, and will kill you in a heartbeat for a few dollars and whatever you have in your pockets. Do you think those 30 shootings this past weekend in Chicago were done by predominantly white people? Let's not keep falling for the liberal card of "If you dare mention race, you're automatically a terrible person", because it does a great disservice to real debate over why some people in the black community seem to care so little for anything (despite having the same opportunities as the rest of us, regardless of what some of you want to believe), and how bleak their future is if the community doesn't start raising better kids and want to change it's course.

Ignore reality if you like, I can't take the blinders of ignorance off of you, that needs to be done by wanting to see reality by leaving the "racism" card behind.

@D.Bag:

Obviously you didn't even understand my point? I didn't infer he/she was Caucasian, I merely implied that, "what if you're wrong" because you base your inferences on statistics. Statistics are not facts, they are merely the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. Here's a better analogy -- an easier one for you to wrap your head around:
** The weatherman gives a forecast that says there's a 40% chance of rain. Will it rain? Maybe, maybe not. He bases his forecast on statistics. However, according to the statistics there's a 60% chance that it's NOT going to rain, so why even forecast rain?**
The same point applies in this case. Why forecast statistics on race?
Race has no significant role in this horrible crime. The most important thing is that the individual(s) responsible MUST be stopped. Stop resorting to semantical gymnastics to justify your obvious racial bias...

To Sarah Millard, Editor: While I can appreciate your genuine plea for "not jumping to conclusions," the comments posted on this article reflect an underlying feeling of unrest concerning the demographic changes occurring in Waukesha. I was just talking to a friend about the changing demographics of Waukesha, prior to this horrific murder, and voicing my concerns about the property values of some areas declining due to the obvious appearances of certain rental apartments. We can all pretend that no decline is occurring in Waukesha, but the reality, unfortunately, speaks to the contrary. That does not make any of the posters racist...just observational realists. I have been involved with Waukesha for over 40 years, but the last five years have shown a noticeable change to the Waukesha I always knew. Carroll University may end up like Marquette University if the situation continues, meaning that students may not want to attend a university that has crime issues in the surrounding neighborhood. I feel so sad for this man and his family - he came to America for a better life for his family, gained citizenship, and was a productive and caring member of society. The American dream failed him...R.I.P.

To anyone unfamiliar with Waukesha...it is not a racist community...even when I was a kid it was well known that Waukesha had a substantial Hispanic population. Whites and Hispanics have lived together peaceably and have assimilated with each other in Waukesha for decades. It is not about race, but about family values and community cohesiveness that have seen a decline due to an influx of outsiders who do not wish to assimilate into the established community spirit (within the past five years or so). Reality and observations trump political correctness - the truth speaks for itself. Pretending there is no problem only exacerbates the symptoms.

I lived in Milwaukee 40 years and always thought of Waukesha as a quaint small town safe place. I've been here 6 mos and there's been the heroin selling mother w/kids at Denny's, Internet predators trying to meet underage girls at mcdonalds, robberies at Jimmie grotto and now a murder. When I pass through downtown I see plenty of borderline vagrant/derelicts coming out of "rooms for rent buildings" and wandering aimlessly appearing intoxicated. I live on Madison and moorland and ther is plenty of delapitaded, neglected, burned, falling down homes all over. This is definitely not what I expected. However, when I was a kid people said the same things about my family, my relatives, my friends that Herb is saying today.. we all "looked suspicious" because we were "darker" than the average kids in the area. Frame Park, the Shuetze Building, the rocket slide, and downtown were our playground. We never got into any trouble. I was taught to give everyone the benefit of the doubt no matter what color they are. Why turn this tragedy into a race thing. A man from Pakistan who has worked hard his whole life has been killed. Let's leave it to the police to solve the crime and stop throwing the color cards around.

The last 2 people that have held up that gas station have been black. Both with guns. So I am a crazy racist to assume it was a black man with a gun? The reason people fear and stereotype is because the statistics speak for themselves. Blacks comprise a scant 13% of the population across the US but are responsible for 50-90% of the violent crime (percentages change depending on the city). Most violent crimes with guns are are committed by black males between the ages of 15-30. That subset of the black population is only 5% of the black community. With actual facts and statistics, why is it so morally wrong to realize the majority of these young males could be violent? I'm no racist- I'm a realist. It breaks my heart the black family is non-existent. Growing up in poverty without a father, a mother most likely dependent on the system their whole lives, no desire to assimilate and a chip on their shoulder about the majority white population is a recipe for disaster. Waukesha Girl, I'm not the problem.

I wouldn't bother with Waukesha Girl, Herb - she's "not in a bubble" because she's lived in WAUKESHA her whole life! I mean, it's just the same here as it is on Milwaukee's north side, am I right?

The girl hasn't bothered to see, read or hear anything that could shatter her bizarre and unfounded perception that somehow, all black people are victims (which allows her to justify murder like this when it happens), and that we're automatically evil for posing questions where we dare even mention race and the changes to the demographics in our city.

You can't argue with those who are blind to all but that which keeps them feeling safe and secure in their cozy little bubble, people like her don't want to know reality, they want a nice little story with a happy ending where we all hold hands and sing kumbaya in harmony. Would be nice if life were like that, but some of us know much better.

I cannot believe the comments that are coming from all of you Waukesha community members. I attend college here in Waukesha, and my home town is Madison. In Madison, you see EVERYTHING. There are more crimes then you would believe. In my opinion this crime was probably random and could've been done by ANY race. Some other races tend to be "known" for doing things like this, but by assuming you are only making yourself look like a fool. Waukesha is NO where near as dangerous as other cities in this state. From an outsiders opinion, Waukesha residents actually have it pretty well made here.
Just to throw out another idea, maybe this is a reason we shouldn't allow conceal and carry? I mean, anyone can purchase a gun and carry it with them..Not sure whose bright idea that was, but it wasn't a smart one.

My prayers and thoughts are with this poor family and I really hope they catch whomever did this terrible crime.

D-bag you know nothing about me.. You don't know that I have known 5 people who have been murdered - 2 by black and 3 by white people. SO therefore I can say that the white folk are out there committing most of the crime. I'm trying to keep things in perspective that we dont' have to condem EVERY SINGLE black person we see, and just because a black person has no father in the picture does not mean they will go out and committ murder. Some do - yes, but so do some while people - with a father at home. Go put on your hood and burn a cross somewhere else, I'm tired of listening to you.

The white people commit the higher percentages of crime because we're 70% of the population (but usually non-violent and virtually no rapes). I would never condemn every black person- I grew up in the "hood" in Milwaukee. I was surrounded by blacks until college. But the majority of robberies, rapes and murders that happened in the neighborhood were committed by blacks. It's a fact that the DOJ website even backs up. The problem is bigger than naively resorting to calling me a racist. That's not doing the black community any favors. It's making it worse. It's people like you constantly say nothing they do is their fault is what exacerbates problems.

What hours was Mr. Rana working? When was he last seen alive? Was money taken? Was he behind the counter or in the aisles? This report says he was shot at 4:20 AM but the newspaper said he was found at 4:20. Who is out at 4:20 on a Tuesday? In Waukesha even the criminals are in bed by that time.

Unfortunately the police aren't releasing that much information. I go to this gas station, they do have a window. All I can think of is that the victim was outside smoking or taking out the garbage or something and that is when the gunman entered the gas station. All the cashiers there are nice and friendly. He was found at 4:20 but probably shot around 1:00 a.m. The police don't tell us alot of things because it's information only the suspect will know. I hope they find whoever did this to a hardworking man with 4 kids at home. .

Race-stuff aside, why didn't we hear about the robberies at the Petro Mart and Jimmy's Grotto until this tragedy happened? What more is happening that the Waukesha PD isn't releasing? The police blotter lists crazies and drunks, and nary a peep about 2 armed robberies in the past 3 weeks!

this nugget right here is what should be most concerning to the citizens of Waukesha. I bet there are MORE violent crimes that are not reported on by local newspapers or other news sources. In fact I would go so far as to say, that some of these are kept quiet on purpose as to not HARM the on going efforts of the City to re-vitalize the downtown. News of armed robbery doesn't sit well with people who want to come and walk around downtown at night. I bet if you were in the "know" for crime that is commited in this City or knew more of the drug problem, the gang problem, etc...you would be amazed. IMP, I believe there is more concern inside the WPD than what they will ever let on to. They know whats going on and are doing there best to control it....BUT I wouldnt be surprised if its a bigger issue than what we are being told. Bottom line is, there are increased issues of crime in this city and to say there isnt a direct relation between the increased crime rate and the increased population of relocated inner city Milwaukeans would be naive.

What we need to think about is what happened here and how can we help this poor mans family to justice... Yes were hurting cuz we lost a great person here in waukesha a caring kind and generious man but the family and friends r hurting the most cus they lost a husband and father. Yes we get that people r judging one race over another.. And yes we all want to know who did this and why. But what we need to do right now i keeping our eys open be aware whats goin on around us. Watching over our family and children. And keeping and eye out for one another. Also if anyone knows anything report it if we see something sketchy if somethings not right REPORT it cus it will only help our community to feel safe and get theSe people off our streets. Let get back to REALITY people and focus on wats important herE. Lets bring justic to our town of waukesha and for his familys sake.

concerned mother
I think what you posted is so true we need to think of the family and keep our eyes open. If you see something that you feels needs to be reported do so. don't let our town become unsafe, we are the ones who need to care and protect our town, and it's members.

First, my main concern is that I'm glad they finally caught this p.o.s. and hopefully he'll rot in prison. I hope this helps with his family's grief. But, I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. A young "african-american" punk who lived on Jackson Court. Shocker. When are we going to stop sweeping this prediliction to violent crime by young black males under the rug?

kcabeznorb- funny you should say that. Sarah Millard stated on the newest post about the crime that "we've been warned" about stating obvious facts. That's what is wrong with the world today. Shame on you, Sarah...

This was Sarah post from May 29:

"Hey guys,

Let's try to keep the hate/anti-Milwaukee speech down. None of you know what race the suspect is, none of you know where the suspect is from and you don't know the circumstances of Tuesday's tragic homicide. If you have inside information, then you should be contacting the police."

NOW..we know the truth. The suspect is Black. He was from Milwaukee. He lives on Jackson Ct. He is on probation for burglary, he had a loaded gun (which I am 99% positive he didnt have a CC permit.). By stating FACTS does not make you a racist. It shows that some long time citizens of this city SEE what is happen and by WHO.

They caught the murderer... big surprise. Who else kills another man in cold blood for Newports and Hostess snacks. If you want to be a good citizen, get your concealed carry permit. There's an epidemic going on: riots at Summerfest, State Fair, St. Patricks, and Juneteenth. It's time someone does something about this problem before they turn Wisconsin into Somalia.
