Police Chief Has No Concerns About 'Occupy Milwaukee' Protest

There's no telling how many "99 Percenters" will attend Saturday's demonstration, but Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn says the department is ready.

On Saturday anywhere from 25 to 4,000 protesters will converge on Zeidler Park and march to Chase Bank in downtown Milwaukee as part of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement that has swept across the nation.

And no matter how many “99 Percenters” turn out for the “Occupy Milwaukee” event, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said his officers are well prepared.

“I don’t have any major concerns, quite honestly. I’m convinced that we have a good pre-plan, and we’ve got a disciplined group of officers attending it,” Flynn said at a press conference Friday evening. “We know our mission.”

The “Occupy Milwaukee” demonstration is set to begin at 11 a.m. with a rally at Zeidler Park along West Michigan Street. The plan is to move the group to the Chase Bank Downtown Center, 111 E. Wisconsin Ave., at 12:30 p.m. and stage a protest.

The MPD will patrol the streets outside Zeidler Park on Saturday, while the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department will patrol the park, which is under county jurisdiction.

Flynn said most protests at other events around the country have been peaceful. He did not reveal the total number of officers that will be on scene Saturday, but simply said there will be “enough.”

“Some demonstrations have had 25, 250 or 1,000 people,” Flynn said. “We are prepared for any eventuality.”

Flynn said the protesters will be given the time to deliver their message in a safe and law-abiding manner. Officers on scene will use their discretion — based on the size, demeanor and scope of the protest — in determining when to end the demonstration.

The “Occupy Wall Street” movement began in New York City. It is a leaderless movement of people who say they no longer want to tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1 percent of the population that controls the nation’s wealth.

Participants in the movement dubbed themselves the “99 Percent," representing the majority of people who have been placed in financial straits. The “Occupy Wall Street” movement claims to use nonviolent tactics during the demonstrations.

The “Occupy Milwaukee” Facebook page has already gained more that 5,300 followers, and organizers say they will use Zeidler Park as a staging area for future actions.

I'd suggest getting an extra complement of Porto-potties and having the officers park their cars several blocks away from the areas where most of the activity will be taking place.

I suggest having the National Guard on speed dial. Flynn thinks everyone will just go home after they give a few speeches. FAIL.

@Nate...Why do you think the Guard would be necessary?

@Lyle - The National Guard may not be needed if these people can act a little better than their NY affiliates. I'm sure there will be insurgents from Madison though to rile things up to an extreme.

@Nate...You're seeing this as a bigger threat than what it really is. In some ways, I almost think you would like to see it get out of hand so that the movement loses all credibility.

I'm guessing the folks from Madison would rather stay home and put their efforts into making as big a spectacle as possible locally. Most of our more colorful local agitators are of an age where they're more likely concerned about slipping and falling on leaves than attempting to make a scene by getting into it with the cops. Of course, a couple of new stars could arise from something like this and tangling with the police is one sure way to become more than just another face in the crowd.

Then again, it's Sweetest Day, too. One of those manufactured holidays that has the potential to get you in trouble with your S.O. if you end up taking it less seriously than they do. Maybe the prospect of several days of unpleasantness will cause those contemplating such action to rethink ending up in police custody and spoiling someone else's plans.

Lyle, I disagree as to which side would actually prefer this to get out of hand. If this becomes nothing more than a peaceful walk through the streets, the attention it will garner and the urgency implicit in its mere existence becomes watered down, particularly in light of the numerous sporting events that are garnering much media coverage at this particular point in time.

Lyle, I am not against PEACEFUL demonstrations. Liberals have not, are not, and never will be able to manage that. Occupy Wall Street degraded into the usual hippie cesspool that is out of touch with the rest of the country. Again, I think our people here will act a little more civilized, but things can easily escalate with a mob mentality.

@Bob McBride...I really don't think this is going to be that big of a turnout. What I see is it is likely that the old left will pretty much pass. If some of the participants get out of hand I don't think it will be supported and will not spread.

Well i'm sure if there are any issues we can count on a speedy MPD response, Right Chief! I mean if protestors start trampling people Flynn will probably just say, "you'll have to wait for us to respond there as you're getting trampled, I mean if you can wait for the cable guy or the plumber you can wait for the police".

If you don't have anything good to say, say nothing at all. Stay home and watch Bambi while the people you hate are out there doing your bidding.

@ angry white dude, go for it. I hope you get kissed by a 60 year old overweight peace loving hippie freak from the 1960s who managed to help change our society back then and knows how to do it now.

It's about pay to play and about Wallstreet being held accountable for profiting from their own rigged game while main street is left in ruins. It's their job to manage risk and not create risk and then bet the other side of their own creation. The American people know that they have been fleeced and are waking up. To say it's simply against rich people is ridiculous. To say it's simply about being against companies making money is also ridiculous. Yes, that's how Fox news likes to report it and it goes to show how deep we go into understanding each other. To skim off the top with assumptions, stereotypes and platitudes and it says more about you than of them. And as I write this, it appears the Chief was correct and others were wrong.
