Man With $800 in His Pocket Tries to Steal from Menard's
New Berlin man charged with trying to steal from Waukesha store in what he described as "stupid" on his part.
A 37-year-old New Berlin man is facing charges after he tried stealing from Menard’s in Waukesha despite having plenty of money to buy the items.
Dennis O. Beard was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint:
On March 28, Waukesha police officers were called to Menard’s after an employee spotted Beard changing the price on an item in order to save $68 while checking out. As soon as they arrived, Beard admitted to the change and officers then found another item in his pocket he was trying to steal.
Beard said he wasn’t sure why he tried to take the items because he already owns them and his wife owns an electric company so he has no reason to steal. He said it was also “stupid” because he had $800 in his wallet at the time and could’ve easily purchased the items.
Officers also discovered Beard is on probation for a previous burglary conviction. He will make his initial appearance in court July 2.
