Teen Charged With Carrying a Hidden Knife

Suspect is approached by a cop after he's spotted walking early morning walking on Sunset Drive, according to a criminal complaint.

An 18-year-old Waukesha man is facing felony charges after he was caught walking with a knife Friday morning, according to a criminal complaint.

Tyler C. Hartleb was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Friday with two counts of felony bail jumping and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. If convicted, he faces up to nearly 13 years in prison and $30,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 2:40 a.m. Friday, a Waukesha police officer was traveling eastbound on West Sunset Drive when he spotted Hartleb walking westbound and wearing a hoodie and dark jeans. The officer then pulled over near South Prairie Avenue and asked Hartleb if it was OK to talk with him.

Hartleb said he was walking from a friend’s house to his home. The officer asked if he could search him and Hartleb agreed and told the officer he had a knife attached to his right forearm.

The officer found a knife with a 4-inch blade, which Hartleb said he uses for protection.

He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $500 bond.

I am confused. Is it illegal to carry a knife with a certain length of blade but not illegal to conceal carry a gun? Why did the cop asked him to search him?

You need a concealed carry permit to carry ANY weapon concealed. If an officer comes in contact with you they have every legal right to search you in order to ensure their safety. If your not a criminial why would it matter to you if they want to ensure scene safety?

If a poloce officer asks to search you they do not have probable cause. They can frisk you without permission, but if they feel something suspicious that gives them probable cause. This guy told the police they had his permission and admitted he had a weapon. He should have denied the search in hopes the pat down yielded nothing.

If he were smart that's what he would have done... Then again if he were smart he wouldn't have a felony case in the courts and be out on bail wandering the streets with a knife...

Danielle you say this is harassment and BS? It is 2:40 AM and a person is walking around wearing a dark hoodie and you ask why the police harass him? I am sure it is because people wearing all dark clothing at 2:40 in the morning are just out for a stroll and don't look supspicious at all.
Besides with pending felony cases this "esteemed citizen" might be known to the officer as someone who might be up to no good.
I give the Officer props for stopping and investigating. Possibly saved some cars from being broken into, maybe even yours Danielle.
