Gov. Scott Walker Says Missouri Senate Candidate Todd Akin 'Should Get Out'

Gov. Scott Walker wants election discussions to be about the future, not "ignorant" comments about rape and pregnancy.

Gov. Scott Walker said Tuesday that Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin should drop out of the race after Akin made controversial comments about rape and pregnancy.

"Yes, he should step down. Those comments were ignorant at best and outrageous," Walker said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Sturtevant.

Akin on Monday said he opposes abortion even in cases of rape because he, added, victims of "legitimate" rape can shut down their body's ability to get pregnant.

Walker joins a growing number of Republicans calling for Akin to get out of the race.

Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson on Monday took to social media to denounce Akin's comments. On Twitter, Johnson called Akin's statements, “reprehensible and inexcusable."

While campaigning for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Milwaukee Tuesday, Johnson reaffirmed his position in an interview with Patch.

"We need the majority of Republicans in the Senate to start passing budget reforms and not spend time on issues created from inappropriate comments," Johnson said. "I'm afraid Akin won’t be able to do that and should step down. The financial problems facing this nation are the top issue. You do have to priotize what issues are front and center. We need to grow jobs and get the economy back on track."

His campaign released a more official statement, saying, in part, that Akin should step aside so Republicans can find a more suitable candidate to unseat incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.

Wisconsin Republican Senate Nominee Tommy Thompson was blunt about Akin's apology not being enough and that he should resign his nomination.

"Congressman Akin should have come to the conclusion by now that his comments were inexcusable and an insult to rape victims," Thompson said in a written statement. "Simply apologizing is not enough. He should step aside and resign the nomination for U.S. Senate immediately."

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in an interview with National Review Online said Akin's comments were "insulting" and that he should take immediate corrective action.

The Romney-Ryan campaign also put out a statement saying they do not oppose abortion in cases of rape.

"Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," said campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg in a story in USA Today.

And Akin's Senate financing seems to have dried up along with the support he was counting on to see him through the election.

The Republican senate committee that helps raise money for candidates has withdrawn some $5 million it was planning to spend in Missouri to help Akin defeat McCaskill, according to a Reuters story on Yahoo.com.

While the comments were bad enough on their own, Walker pointed to how important the November elections are for determining which party holds the balance of power in the Senate.

"He should get out of the race, not just for Missouri, but for the country because that Senate race could very well determine the future of this country," he added. "I want the debate to be about the future, not about issues like that where I think (Akin) made a horribly ignorant statement. He should get out."

Was there a story on Biden's PUT YA' ALL BACK IN CHAINS? Did they ask Walker about that?
Aiken is certainly a distraction that the liberal media is looking for to Change the topic on Obama and the Democrats completely dismal results. Obama had both houses of congress and could of done whatever him and his party agreed on. What they agreed on was a disaster for the nation and now they (the media ) will spend weeks on one conservative completely foolish statement. Democrats live in foolish statements but its not news as its the norm and the liberal media largely ignores those stories. This is more of the same. Obama, Pelosi, Reid and Biden are mistake machines. But that's not news when they make ignorant statements as to their true and actual views. .
Its not wrong to ask Walker his opinion on this matter. . But if he did comment on the many foolish statements of Liberals it wouldn't make the news. I think we all know that.

Paul Ryan has co-sponsored anti-abortion legislation with Akin; they apparently share the same views that there are somehow tiers or levels of heterosexual rape. GOPrs want Akin out because he is publicly verbalizing mystical viewpoints that a number of them also believe. Question is, are there tiers or levels of homosexual rape too? Can a male rape victim secrete a magic serum that protects against AIDS?

Women of America, I hope you are paying attention.

Paul Ryan, your atheist hero Ayn Rand was pro-choice.

Greg, I'm merely pointing out that this wasn't a one-off gaffe by an extreme candidate. This is an actual belief held by a number of GOP'rs who are attempting to pass legislation based on this belief in despite of a lack of scientific/medical evidence. As a person from the 20th/21st Century I find this inane.

Ayn Rand and ALEC are on the current political hotplate. Are you only able to focus on one issue at a time? How unfortunate for you. And no, I do not believe there are tiers/levels to rape. It is a violent act against another human being that has traumatic, lifelong repercussions for the victim, and also family and friends. It doesn't matter if the victim is a female or male. Rape is about rage and power, a sick, vicious, antisocial act that says, "You are nothing. You are a piece of meat." Terror, flashbacks, loss of self/esteem are among the traumatic repercussions. These are exacerbated by fools who suggest the victim somehow had a part to play in bringing a violent crime upon themselves.

I dont mind Heather reporting the story. I merely pointed out the double standard that exists. That's not out of bounds. The story is fine . But the main stream media certainly has that bias. Liberal media outlets other than Radio and Fox is the norm . So they select stories to advance personal leanings . They will pounce on conservatives and give a pass to Libs for similar or worse conduct.
The story here is not bias on the facts. My comment isn't so much about Heather's story but to the reality that if the shoe was on the other foot such as the Biden comment you don't get anything close to the uproar. Biden statement was just as ignorant and even the former Virginia governor who is a more moderate black democrat was offended. Obama released a statement defending the ignorant comment of Biden and the media immediately leaves the story. That just the reality .
I agree with Walker . I want the guy out of the race. But at the same time he is being measured by a far higher standard than his Liberal counterparts who misspeak in the mainstream media .I do not consider the Patch mainstream as clearly these forums are opinion driven . The story is accurate but so is my opinion from my perspective.
Let me be clear . I dont have a problem with Heather as this is a story in the national news. My comment is more as to why this is a BIG deal when similar things across the aisle are seldom even noteworthy in the mainstream media.

How about Romney standing up and unequivocally stating that the RNC needs to insert explicit exceptions into it's anti-abortion platform language? Oh, and what, exactly, is "forcible rape" as compared to non-forcible(?) rape? Ryan should know, as co-sponsor of a House bill that created this concept...

@ Bert
i dont know what the guy was referencing with the poor statement of Legitimate rape . I think he apologized and said he was wrong. Joe Biden didnt apologize and his statement was just as ignorant .But thats just racist JOE right ?
Also .....There is a difference and distinction between Forcible rape and non forcible rape. Take the example of a 18 year old kid with his 17 year old girlfriend. If they have sex do you want them treated the same as a guy that grabs a women in an alley and forcibly rapes her . One is consenting but technically rape in many places. This is a question society must pose as the realities are certainly different . If we don't want to make some distinction in that type of case, we have to greatly increase the rape statistics. If you dont think we have gray areas in rape it is you who are showing some ignorance. The courts and families continue to wrestle with the issue I stated all the time. Where have you been?
No one is out saying the guy is right . But your last paragraph showed little thought as well as the issue is a lot more complex than to ignorantly call all technical rape a forcible attack . I think society would find ignorance in your view as well. Reality is the courts are not very consistent but they do view cases differently because circumstances vary. Your view most would reject as it wouldnt take any factors into account.. I think most would find that unacceptable.

Clearly the individuals indulging in these fantastical ideas have not experienced this type of trauma personally or reviewed case histories, which would allow them to gain a glimmer of understanding into the depth and duration of destruction this crime causes to the victim's psyche and the concentric rings of trauma and anguish to parents, spouses, siblings, etc., which can last a lifetime and even impact future generations. The clause of allowing abortions in instances of rape I believe is intended to end the violation. Carrying a child of rape is a continuance of the violence, and that is what this cast of sorry characters does not think about. This should be an issue between the victim, parents if she is a minor, and professionally trained, credentialed medical staff.

I'm getting tired of these right-wing fringe "fantasies" being aired in public. Pills between the knees, sex ed curriculum, "she asked for it." I was watching tv with a young female relative when video of "Pills Between the Knees" billionaire Foster Friess appeared. Her response? "Creepster!" I 100% agree. Enough is enough.

Paul Ryan is supposed to be a pro-life Catholic. That is supposed to be what Catholics stand for. A life is a life is a life is a life.

What exactly is wrong with being pro-life without exception.

These Republicans should have kept their mouths shut and let the issue fade away. Sad to say this campaign is starting to sound like the McCain campaign. mau, Paul Ryan follows the teachings of atheist philosopher Ayn Rand, who incidentally was pro-choice. If it all seems confused and off-kilter that's because it is. I don't know anyone who can reconcile atheistic philosophies with religious beliefs; it is one or the other. Much as he tries to backpedal Ryan is on record (AtlasShrugged) as crediting atheist adulteress Ayn Rand for molding his philosophical viewpoint since he was young.

If females truly had a magic anti-pregnancy secretion, would that make rape a less disgusting, sick, and violent crime? I suggest not, as rape is primarily about power/dominance/suppression.

I have many friends who are atheists and other religions, who I share beliefs with. I don't shut people out just because I don't agree with their philosophy 100%. I have many Mormon friends and know several Scientologists. I even know a few Native Americans who practice what may be considered "out of the mainstream". I may not agree with their religious or non-religious beliefs, but that does not stop me from sharing with or respecting their philosophical viewpoints.

As far as your statement "magic anti-pregnancy secretion", why are you labeling pro-lifers with this blanket statement. As skinnyDUDE stated, not all rapes are created equal.

Comment_arrow

mau, the "jump" as you refer to it involves Paul Ryan's co-sponsorship of bills with Akin. And by no means do I lump all pro-lifers into the "magical secretion" category. The pro-lifers I know are against abortion for religious/personal moral code reasons. Not one has mentioned the "magical secretion."

Other than the legal categories of rape (statutory/non-statutory) there are no other tiers of rape. It is a violent crime.

On January 7, 2011, U.S. Representative Paul Broun (R-GA) introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 212, the Sanctity of Human Life Act. Co-sponsored by 62 representatives, including Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the bill declares that:

the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being, and is t he paramount and most fundamental right of a person; and
the life of each human being begins with fertilization, cloning, or its functional equivalent, irrespective of sex, health, function or disability, defect, stage of biological development, or condition of dependency, at which time every human being shall have all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.

This whole rape thing is important, because in order to understand why this Akin guy was talking about legitimate rape you need to dig this bill that was co-sponsered by Ryan and Akin...

If abortions are illegal except for rape...then you need to define rape..."Legitimate" rape is only if you are forced to have sex...not if you were looking like you might be asking for it!

the use of and denouncing of inappropriate words is easy ("legitimate", "shutting down"). It is the POLICIES advocated and supported by, and the apparent differences tbereof, that SHOULD BE the meaningful substance of this discussion: the criminalization of abortions, and whether having been Raped should be a mitigating factor.

The platform of the Democrat Party which supports abortion at any stage for any reason, including partial birth abortion, is not extreme. It is not extreme to practice partial birth abortion (infanticide/murder) of a baby who can survive outside the womb. It is not extreme to suck and rip the full term baby to pieces.

The Republican Platform is extreme because it does not support abortion.

So comparing these two criteria, Obama/Biden support murder and Romney/Ryan support life.

They aren't the ones who matter. They're already trapped in a cesspool of hatred and anger and need to find fault with everyone who doesn't see things through their remarkably narrow lens.

The only reason some of these people reacted the way they did is because it's embarrassing for Republicans and they'd rather pretend it didn't happen; ie, sweep it under the rug.

Unfortunately, there are still some real PR problems in the party who aren't helping conservatives at all. Like the mayor of Lubbock Texas.
