Fire Marshal Discovers Dryer Fire

Brian Charlesworth was in the right place at the right time while completing inspections at Carroll University.

Normally, the is dispatched to the scene of a fire, but Tuesday afternoon, the fire inspector practically stumbled upon a dryer fire.

Fire Marshal Brian Charlesworth was conducting fire inspections at Carroll University at 1:14 p.m. Tuesday when he heard a smoke detector going off in a nearby residence. Charlesworth followed the noise to 204 N. Charles St. where he found smoke and heat in the Carroll-owned home. Charlesworth quickly called a possible structure fire into the department to have additional fire personnel respond.

“I can honestly say that in 11 years of doing this job, I have never walked around and found a fire,” Charlesworth said.

The fire was a pile of towels smoldering in the dryer. No one was home at the time, but because of Charlesworth’s observations and being in the right place at the right time, the damage was limited to the dryer.

was able to alert the resident of the house and the resident responded within minutes, according to Charlesworth.
