'Fake Democrats' to Appear on Ballots for Recall Elections

Six Republican "recall protest candidates" will run for the various governor and senator seats facing a recall election, likely forcing a primary race. Among them is 80-year-old Gladys Huber, of Mequon, who's done this before.

The "fake Democrats" are coming out again.

Six of them, in fact, who plan to get their names on the ballot in the upcoming recall elections, according to an Associated Press article. Though they've been labeled "fake Democrats," GOP spokesman Ben Sparks calls them "recall protest candidates."

The group includes: Gladys Huber, running who is running for governor; Isaac Weix, running for lieutenant governor; and Gary Ellerman, Tamara Varebrook, James Engel and James Buckley, who are running as Democrats in four state Senate recall elections.

Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and four state senators, including Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Van Wanggaard, Pam Galloway and Terry Moulton are targeted for recall.

The state Republican party has said it is running placeholder Democrats to ensure primaries take place in all recall races and general elections are held on the same date for all targeted Republicans.

"The Republican Party will not actively campaign for the protest candidates, other than collecting nomination signatures to ensure their place on the ballot," Republican Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Stephan Thompson said in a statement. "Without protest candidates, the Democratic Party would be able to control the dates in which Republican officials face election, potentially separating the elections for state senate and lieutenant governor from the governor."

This is not the first time Huber has played a role in such politics. An 80-year-old Mequon Republican activist, Huber filed papers in June to run as a Democrat in the 8th Senate District recall election — forcing a primary against state Rep. Sandy Pasch of Whitefish Bay.

While Huber wouldn't tell Patch then why she was running as a Democrat against Pasch, there is no doubt that she has longtime roots as an active member of the Republican party in Ozaukee County.

Born in April 1931, Huber is one of 10 people elected to serve as a leader in the Ozaukee County Republican Party; she boasted a yard sign supporting Darling in front of her home, and is a longtime poll worker in Ozaukee County — serving as the Republican observer in the Supreme Court recount.

The primary was held in July, and Pasch won with 64 percent of the vote; Huber walked away with 11,660 votes while Pasch earned 20,915.

The state Government Accountability Board set the election dates for May 8 and June 5. These "Fake Democrats" will likely force the primary, which would be held May 8; the general election date will be June 5.

Candidates who want to run have until 5 p.m. April 10 to circulate and file nomination petitions and declaration of candidacy papers with the state Government Accountability Board.

This gives a whole new meaning to the old saying "I don't belong to any organized political party --- I am a Democrat"

I think the Dems should give Gladys their Democrat of the Year award at their next annual convention --- they could have a place at the head table for her, and if she doesn't show up --- you know hard to travel at that age --- they could put a picture of her on the seat :-)

I read this and reminisced about playground bullies remembered from childhood. The one who would grab the ball and run away, the ones who smashed snow forts, pushed people down, and cheated at games. And of course the creative tattlers, the ones who could find no misdeeds to tell teacher about so made them up. And the sore losers, who would become nasty and aggressive when they didn't get their own way.

Fortunately, most children learn that this is socially unacceptable/embarrassing behavior and move on.

Bob, I always appreciate a good "compare and contrast" response. However, the recall process is 100% legal, as is freedom of speech. The 14 Dems who withdrew did this state a great service in my opinion. They drew national attention to the evolving situation in Wisconsin where an ALEC governor was causing polarization with misrepresentations and lies of omission (union stripping).

No matter how much you disagree with the recall (and I still cannot understand how people can still support Scott Walker), for one political party to try to manipulate the primary process of another does not compare.

Bob, I disagree. In the first place, if Scott Walker had fulfilled his campaign promise to "negotiate with public employee unions" and been respectful of the fact that they had already been given furloughs in the latter days of the Doyle administration, he might not even be facing recall right now. But instead he preferred to--what did he call it when he was speaking to the fake David Koch?--"drop the bomb." That sort of sets a tone, wouldn't you agree?

I'd like to know your thoughts if the situation were reversed and Democrats were putting in their own "fake Republicans" to force primaries. I doubt you would be sanguine about it.

Bob, we'll have to respectfully disagree. If the one fact alone that Scott Walker is the first Wisconsin governor to hire a criminal defense team doesn't throw a bitter wind against your sails, how will any other documented facts convince you? But if ALEC's major corporate supporters walk away (except big funder Koch Industries I expect), will you at least concede that this might not be the best organization to be guiding our governor and state?

Bob, I appreciate your position. I had asked at the time that law team was hired why the governor couldn't use state legal counsel during the investigation, without a response. It wasn't until they were hired that I considered that Scott Walker might be personally involved in the case. After all, he has been known since County Exec days to not surround himself with the" best and brightest," hence the costly maneuvers and mistakes.

Frankly, I don't feel like a "sore loser" for supporting the recall. I didn't vote for him as his antics as County Executive convinced me that he lacked leadership skills. The extreme polarization he has caused has justified my concern. His lies of omission concerning his true intentions during his campaign are egregious and require accountability. The recall election provides opportunity for the people of Wisconsin to decide whether they want a governor for Wisconsin or for ALEC/Big Business.

As the ALEC story continues to unfold and the nationally known companies continue to state their opposition to the Stand Your Ground-type legislation they inadvertently supported, I think more Wisconsinites will appreciate the danger to public and economic security posed by having an ALEC puppet in the governor's seat.

If you won't pay attention to all the data out there about ALEC and the Koch Brothers, listen to Coca Cola!

3% Accuracy Is New Walker, Wisc. GOP Standard

.......* Then there was the horrible, $7.5 million in damage allegedly caused by disrespectful protesters during demonstrations inside the State Capitol and on its grounds against Scott Walker's collective-bargaining power grab last winter.

That big dollar number was also bandied about by hysterical, agenda-driven talkers, and was even provided during a court hearing in Madison by Walker administration officials to justify a push for new rules to close the Capitol and save it from Vandals for posterity - - but in reality to chill protesters' First Amendment rights and insulate GOP legislators and Walker officials from the consequences of their actions.

On Wednesday, the final damage remediation figure was released: $200,000 in labor, material and custodial costs to reseed lawns and repair marks and minor damage to walls and pillars - - regrettable expenses, yes, but in no way proportionate to dishonest early claims and the way the numbers were falsified and politicized...

This is the first part from the article above.

3% Accuracy Is New Walker, Wisc. GOP Standard

Talk about a lowered bar.

* Remember all the predictions of bad signatures on petitions to recall Scott Walker, raising the specter of one of the Republicans' biggest fake causes - - voter fraud?

Righty talk show hosts said at least 25%, maybe more, would be tossed.

When the review by state officials was finished, roughly 3% of over 900,000 signatures gathered by meticulously-careful gatherers, were discarded as illegible, duplicated or otherwise unacceptable. 97% is a great score in just about any contest or examination...

And could incur 10,000 dollar fines and 3 and 1/2 years in jail for all those involved (not just the candidates themselves but also those who have planned these activities). http://www.defendwisconsin.org/2012/04/05/running-fake-democrats-may-be-a-felony/

TK,

That statute does not speak to this matter, rather it is about fraudulent activity and falsifying documents. There is nothing fraudulent in what they are doing. It could be looked at as an ethical issue, but that is not what you are claiming. In fact, I am sure either Huber or Weix would be happy to actually win the election and run for the position in which they are circulating the nomination papers.

There is not a litmus test that one has to pass to run in as a Democrat. In fact, the Republican party has some elected members that are closer to being democrat than they are republican. For example, If Tommy Thompson wanted to run in the democratic primary for the State Senate seat he could do that. Another great example is Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke who runs as a Democrat.

The real simple solution would have been for the GAB to schedule all of the final elections on the same day. However, that wouldn't have been to the democrats advantage, which is why they scheduled them as they did.

It seems the democrats feel good about dishing it out and pushing limits, but when someone else plays their game they seem to suddenly have problems with that strategy.

Let the TeaGOP make fools of themselves once again. With Walker' War ON Women, he is going down.

April 6, 2012

Recall-Facing Wis. Gov. Walker Continues 'War on Women' With Flurry of Bills
Gov. Walker signed dozens of bills that "turn back the clock on women’s health, safety, wellness and economic security”

...Walker, who is facing a June 5 recall election, privately signed a slew of legislation on Thursday that some Democrats see as evidence of an ongoing "war on women."

“Instead of a jobs and economic priority from the state legislature, we’ve had a series of bills introduced, passed and now signed into law, that really turn back the clock on women’s health, safety, wellness and economic security,” said Sara Finger with the Wisconsin Alliance for Women's Health.

Among the dozens of bills signed by Walker is a repeal of the state's Equal Pay law, a bill barring abortion coverage through health insurance exchanges, and a repeal of the Healthy Youth Act so that now sex education teachers do not have to teach contraception.

"The reason that .. Walker signed these anti-women bills in the dark of the night, without public notice, before a holiday weekend, is that he is banking on the fact that women are NOT watching and women will not vote on June 5. In fact, he is betting his job on it," said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin.....

Morninmist, did you happen to learn how many new Wisconsin jobs are being created by all of these measures?

Questions for the ladies: Does it matter that you can't sue your employer if you find that you are not receiving the same pay as male counterparts? Or that abortion is no longer covered on your insurance even though you are unlikely to get a discount because of lessened coverage?

Questions for the men: Do you appreciate not having instruction about contraceptives not being reinforced to your male teenage offspring in school? And that if your son gets a girl pregnant because he didn't get that reinforcement, an abortion will be that much more expensive for you as it's no longer covered?

Question for all: Do you appreciate a government so large that it now dictates a subjective extreme right-wing "morality" on your personal behavior?

You don't have to respond to me, please take your answer to the voting booth in the recall election.

Clark, it's naive to think that adults can't live with disappointment. Certainly it's not the first time an election has been held and a preferred candidate doesn't win. What makes this situation any different? Because the situation is egregious and it is bigger than Wisconsin. Scott Walker is promoting the ALEC agenda at the expense of our state and indirectly our country and it cannot continue.

Voters selected Scott Walker because of his Jobs Jobs Jobs platform. They are not to be blamed for the complete misrepresentation and lie of omission that Scott Walker's campaign turned out to be. But it needs to be stopped. Are there any new jobs in the flurry of bills Walker just signed? Abortion restriction bills, contraceptive education in high school (when it is most useful), etc.?

You might accept sedition for profit Clark but there are many patriotic Americans who don't. You'll just have to choose for yourself.

The capitol cleanup was an ESTIMATE, and a super wild one at that. Mike Huebsch estimate was based on typical damage to the marble caused by the tape residue. As it turned out the damage was minimal and fairly easily buffed out since it was not on for too long of a time.
Still, $43,00 to clean up tape that should not have been their in the first place is too much. I had no problem with the protesters being in the building during BUSINESS HOURS, I had no problem with the protesters bringing in HAND_HELD signs, and I had no problem with the traffic mess created around the square due to all the protesters. But this group went waaaaaaaaay too far in everything it did.

When interview by PolitiFact why Scott Walker was about to rack up another "false" rating for his mischaracterization of the union-stripping bill as covering "all" public employees - - when it exempted police and fire union members from certain new benefit costs - - a spokeswoman came up with perhaps the must audacious excuse yet:

He was addressing a national audience in "shorthand" and it doesn't need to hear the facts.

We asked Walker campaign spokeswoman Ciara Matthews about the governor’s characterization of the law.

She acknowledged Walker did not mention the police and firefighter exemptions and said the governor was speaking in generalities for a national audience and didn’t have time to be more specific....
