Daily Recall Roundup: June 4

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election.

Every day between now and Tuesday's gubernatorial recall election, Patch will provide daily updates on what's happening on the campaign trail.

Check back with this column throughout the day for the latest recall-related news.

3:35 p.m.: US Department of Justice Will Monitor Wisconsin on Tuesday

A team of special agents from the Division of Criminal Investigation and assistant attorney generals will head to Wisconsin on Tuesday to ensure make sure everyone complies with the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which outlaws discrimination in the election process based on race, color or membership in a minority language group.

“The June recall election is a significant event in our state's history,” said state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen (R) in a press release. “The people of Wisconsin need to have confidence that their rights are being protected and the laws are being followed."

3:15 p.m.: More Than 206,000 Absentee Ballots Issued as of Noon Monday

The Government Accountability Board has released an update on the number of absentee ballots issued for the June 5 recall election. As of noon Monday, a total of 206,128 were issued by Wisconsin's election officials who use the Statewide Voter Registration System. That's 33 percent more than the number of absentee ballots cast in the May 8 recall primary election.

However, only about one-third of municipalities use this system to track absentee ballots so there could be a substantially larger number.

8:50 a.m.: Walker, Barrett plan busy days

With one day to go before the historic recall election, Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Tom Barrett will be crisscrossing the state looking for votes.

Walker will be touring five Wisconsin businesses today: Placon Plastics in Fitchburg, the Coulee Region RV Center in West Salem, J & D Manufacturing in Eau Claire, Stevens Point Brewery in Stevens Point, and the Green Bay Distillery in Green Bay. He will cap his long day with a election eve rally slated for 10 p.m. at Serb Hall in Milwaukee.

Barrett will meet with voters today at the Jules Coffee shop in La Crosse, the Dish and the Spoon Café in River Falls, the Trig Food store in Rhinelander and the Portage campaign office. Barrett will end the day with a 6 p.m. rally UAW Local 72 Hall in Kenosha.

8:35 a.m.: Feingold to make appearances for Barrett

Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold will be making three campaign stops on behalf of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett.

Feingold will appear at 1:15 p.m. at the AFSCME offices, 8033 Excelsior Dr., Madison; at 4 p.m. at the Brown Deer recall office, 8550 W. Brown Deer Rd.; and at 6 p.m. at the UAW Local 72 Hall, 3615 Washington Rd., Kenosha. He will be joined by Barrett at the final stop.

7:40 a.m.: New poll shows race tightening

A poll released late Sunday by Public Policy Polling shows that Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has narrowed the gap a bit in the gubernatorial recall race against Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

PPP's final poll on the recall shows Walker leading Barrett by 50 percent to 47 percent — a 3 percentage point margin. That's down from a 5 point margin on a PPP poll conducted three weeks ago and it's also down from a 52 percent to 45 percent lead that Walker posted in a Marquette Law poll released last week.

Amond independent voters, Barrett is leading by 48 percent to 46 percent, the poll says.

The polling firm says the main reason that Barrett trails Walker is that Republicans are more motivated to get to the polls on Tuesday than Democrats.

“What’s going to determine Tuesday’s outcome is pretty simple,” said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, a firm affiliated with the Democratic Party. “If Democrats turn out in the same numbers that they did in 2008, Tom Barrett will win a surprise victory. And if they don’t Scott Walker will survive.”

PPP surveyed 1,226 likely voters on Saturday and Sunday. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

The Huffington Post reports that 15 surveys on the recall election have been released over the past month, and while most have produced close results, all but one have given Walker the advantage. Independent polls have generally given Walker a bigger lead than the handful of publicly released internal polls sponsored by the Barrett campaign or its Democratic allies.

With all polls included, including the internal surveys by the Democrats, the HuffPost Pollster chart of all available Wisconsin surveys gives Walker a lead of 2.8 points (50.3 percent to 47.5 percent). With the Democratic campaign polls excluded, however, Walker's lead grows to 3.9 points (50.6 percent to 46.7 percent).

7:30 a.m.: Jesse Jackson urges blacks to 'march your souls to the polls'

In a last minute push to garner more votes, the Rev. Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition held a rally in Racine Sunday night that drew about 100 people.

The Racine NAACP hosted the event. Organizers say the upcoming election on Tuesday is “too close to call,” and Jackson came to town to persuade African-Americans to vote.

“Martyrs died for the right to vote,” Jackson told the crowd. “You can march your souls to the polls and vote on Tuesday. We demand to have our right to vote protected, we will vote on Tuesday with our hopes and not our fears.”

See Patch's story and video from the rally.

@morninmist -

You really want to talk about 'Pants on Fire' ratings - look no further than your main man Graeme Zielinski!

Not to mention that Barrett has a higher percentage of LIES than Walker on actual rated assertions. They've only been watching Barrett for a relatively short period of time, in comparison to Walker, need I remind you? Not to mention that of Barrett's most recent assertions, he's received a FALSE and a PANTS ON FIRE rating. Sure looks to me like someone is trying to LIE their way to a victory on election night. Honestly, doesn't it upset you that Barrett thinks you're a complete moron???

If Politifact actually assessed everything done by both sides, there is little doubt that your side would take the cake in 'Pants on Fire' - boy rape, fake love child stories, Barrett hiding Milwaukee's debt rating downgrade while claiming that he is saving future generations from the burden of debt, .... the list is quite simply endless!

But you never acknowledge the FACTS or apply any INDEPENDENT THOUGHT!

If you'd remove yourself from the mist of bullcrap long enough, you just may find wisdom after all!

To the end!

Not sure why Walker is concentrating his efforts so much on western ?Wisconsin. Maybe it's the free publicity on the Twin Cities media.

If it's money his is looking for, he should just go visit Daine Hendricks' ABC Supply Company. They have reward he quite handsomely.

Between Feb. 2011 and June 4, 2012, people working at ABC have made 10 contributions totalling $31,255. This doesn't count Hendricks other bigh donations. An average of $312 per contribution.

During that same time period, 106 contributions went to Walker for a total of only $16,016. An average of $151. Evidently the Hudson people aren't getting the same ROI as Hendricks.

Just driving around, one can CLEARLY see that Governor Walker has strong support throughout our great state. Yard signs in support of Walker are everywhere the eye can see.

This frivolous recall has awoken a sleeping giant. Get ready for an even bigger conservative wave than the one experienced in 2010!

Believe in Wisconsin - VOTE WALKER, KLEEFISCH, and WANGGAARD on Tuesday, June 5th!!!

@Alfred -

Sometimes you do our side a great disservice. We can beat them with our ideas and the facts, there's no need to take it there - it's petty, disgraceful, and reflects poorly on us. Walker would not be happy.

Win or lose---Walker will soon be in court. His buddies are squealing on him.

BREAKING: Scott Walker's Closest Aide Revealed in Court as Source of Damaging Leak; Flips on Embattled Governor
Scott Walker's closest political aide has just been named in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Monday as the source of damaging revelations that undermine Walker's claim that he has cooperated with the John Doe criminal corruption probe into his current and former administrations.
Tim Russell, who was hired or promoted by Scott Walker even after he was fired for stealing from a state agency, was said in court Monday to have given Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Dan Bice information that showed that, contrary to Walker's claims, Walker was stonewalling investigators all along.

The shocking revelation that Scott Walker's closest aide sought to damage Walker on the eve of Tuesday's historic recall election indicated that Russell was cooperating with a prosecution against Walker himself......

Just goes to show how hypocritical the left really is. Here is the city ordinance that was quoted by the officers saying those individuals supporting Walker on that foot bridge was totally bogus!!
City Ordinance 118-62 deals with Draw Bridges..... Last time I ckd a draw bridge is a little different than a foot bridge.
118-62. Pedestrian and Traffic Regulations
Upon Bridge. 1. DRIVING ON DRAWBRIDGE
PROHIBITED AFTER SIGNAL. Any person or
persons who shall walk or attempt to walk on the
draw of the aforesaid bridges, or propel any
automobile, bicycle or other similar vehicle on
the draw of the aforesaid bridges after the
operator of such bridge has commenced to give
the signal for swinging or opening the bridge,
shall be deemed guilty of an offense and shall be
liable to a fine of not more than $100 nor less
than $25 for each and every such offense, or to
imprisonment in the house of correction of
Milwaukee county for not more than 30 days, in
the discretion of the court.

@morninmist -

DA Chisholm, a Democrat, who's office is responsible for handling the John Doe investigation, held a press conference wherein he personally stated that it was Walker who had requested the investigation and that Walker was doing everything that he could to cooperate with such, remember?

Are you and your fellow Democrats now calling DA Chisholm a LIAR? Are you guys going to be requesting a John Doe investigation against Chisholm now for lying in the press conference? After all, if what you're now asking us to believe is true, then that would mean that Chisholm LIED to everyone, right?

Looks to me like you guys have LIED so much that you can't even keep your own spin straight anymore!

Like I said before, please, start THINKING for yourself!

WisPolitics: Russell lawyer acknowledges releasing documents suggesting Walker administration wasn't cooperating with investigators
6/4/2012

By Marie Rohde
For WisPolitics.com

A lawyer for Tim Russell acknowledged today that he released documents that resulted in a news story saying Scott Walker's administration had stonewalled the investigation of money stolen from a fund for veterans.

Democratic spokesman Graeme Zielinski called the revelation "stunning" and said after the hearing that the release is a clear indication that Russell, a longtime aide and friend of Walker's, was now cooperating with investigators.

Walker’s campaign has strongly denied that he did anything to impede the investigation and insists his administration was unable to obtain information about the missing money and went to prosecutors with its concerns, prompting the probe.

Meanwhile, Judge David Hansher delayed the trial, which had been scheduled for June, until Sept. 10 because of pre-trial publicity, including Russell's photo being featured in anti-Walker ads. The prosecution did not oppose the delayed trial date. ....

Once again, are you guys calling DA Chisholm a LIAR?

Sure looks like it to me!

As far as I'm concerned with all the spin going on between the DA's office and Democrats over this, and why are the Democrats even involved in getting these leaks from secret sources within the office anyway, the integrity of the John Doe has been compromised and should be halted immediately and officially dissolved! Nothing but a waste of our tax dollars at this point anyway.

I wish the Milwaukee County DA's office would have put as much effort into investigating the BBQ for Votes scandal as they did Walker!
