Greater Milwaukee Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant to PSC Inc.
Waukesha, Wis. – The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to Pregnancy Support Connection Inc. to fund the expansion of case management services for its parenting education and support program.
The grant will help PSC expand its work in providing parenting education, support and other resources to at-risk teens and young women in an effort to break the cycle of poverty, abuse, neglect and other risk factors that often lead to unplanned pregnancies. The PSC Parenting Program, launched in January, allows PSC case managers to continue to work with the most vulnerable, “at-risk” moms beyond the prenatal stage, throughout the critical stages of early child development. The program focuses on positive parent-child interaction, building safe, stable environments, and life skills coaching to help these new moms become productive, confident parents.
“The Parenting Program addresses a critical need to maintain a consistent support system for many clients working to develop a positive and healthy environment,” said Nancy Major, Executive Director of Pregnancy Support Connection Inc. “We are extremely grateful to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation for its generous support, its recognition of the Parenting Program’s value, and its acknowledgment of the incredible dedication that the PSC board and staff exhibits on a daily basis.”
Prior to the start of the Parenting Program, the PSC professional case management team completed an intensive training program recognized among the most advanced, research and evidence-based parenting support programs available. In its efforts to further broaden its reach and strengthen the families served, PSC is expanding its collaborative relationship with Healthy Families into a solid partnership.
Receipt of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation grant comes just weeks after PSC received honorable mention as the 2011 Waukesha County Executive’s Small Non-Profit of the Year, another significant recognition of its work and achievements.
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation is a family of over 850 individual charitable funds, each created by donors to serve the local charitable causes of their choice. Grants from these funds serve people throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. Started in 1915, the Foundation is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the U.S.
Pregnancy Support Connection provided services to nearly 1,000 young women in 2010. Many PSC clients come from homes where abuse, neglect and poverty are common. More than 85 percent have experienced childhood sexual abuse. PSC - formerly known as UP Connection – is dedicated to breaking the cycle of child abuse and neglect in southeastern Wisconsin. Its team of dedicated professionals provides comprehensive services, intervention and education to help women deliver healthy babies and become stable, self-sufficient parents. The organization’s motto, “For Safe Babies,” reflects its goal of helping mothers and babies develop strong, nurturing relationships and find success in life.
